... then again to get back.

Sean and I had finished auditing the last few schools in the Hunter/Central coast area but the film was not ready and would not be ready till the following week, so we found ourselves with a free week. At first I thought that I would go to Cairns or maybe Tasmania but being pretty much school holidays and last minute, plane tickets weren’t on the cheap side, so after bit of thinking, Broken Hill seemed like an interesting place to go checkout ...

... the town. One of the buildings on top of the pile is a memorial for the more than 800 mine workers killed in industrial accidents. Hilary and Alec searched for the youngest (14), and the oldest (74). Our tour guide yesterday remarked that in the boom times there were 6,500 mine workers employed in Broken Hill. Advanced mechanisation and computerisation has reduced this number to about 600. Industrial safety has also improved ...

... the city! We went up, got lots of pictures and then made our way to Silverton! I first read about this place in "Down Under" by Bill Bryson. It is a small ghost town with a pub - the Silverton Hotel which has featured in lots of films and advertisments! Some films include Mad Max, December Boys and lots of beer commercials- check out "Where the Bloody Hell are you" commercial on Youtube(seconds 1-3!)!! We went for ...

... dirty grey nets hanging limply and a dark foreboding demeanour. An unanswered knock on the door led to ringing the mobile number and being told he (the manager?!) would come shortly. Currently, David is reading Bill Bryson's book "Down Under" chuckling through it. Bill Bryson mentions this Hotel commenting on the bizarre wall murals that adorn the inside. While waiting outside David filled me in: "An aboriginal painted them - in short bursts - some years ago. He'd come by, paint ...

... The Darling looks more like the Yarra River than a scenic country river - it looks so much like a big ice coffee. You can definitely tell where the two rivers meet - the Murray is a lot cleaner. We're begun a bit of a 'morning thing' when on the road whereby when we made our morning tea stop, we visit and make a purchase at the local bakery - we'll provide you with the winner at the end of ...

Cruising the Outback to Broken Hill

... out after what must have been over an hour there was quiet the a Que outside. However after returning to my seat I noticed that some of the fellow passengers were moaning at the the staff that they had to shower in cold water. They even announced an apology over the speaker phone for the lack of hot water. I just sat back in my seat feeling very fresh indeed. I felt lovely and smelt great, not like the other passengers who smelt ...

... Proprietary Company) was formed and went on to be Australia's biggest and most successful public company. The rest is history and the town grew to a population of over 20,000 a few years later. It is now in decline and people are leaving as more modern methods are used for mining and work is scarce. We are staying at a campsite not far from the city centre which is relatively quiet, so we have been able to take full advantage of the pool all to ourselves. The ...
