Day 1 - Dover to Nimes (via Millau)

Crikey what a day. Thursday evening we all met on Marine Parade in Dover, far too early for check in to the ferry. Stood around in the cold and drizzle (Summer?) till check in time (11pm). Ferry crossing went as planned and wasn't too rough which was nice. 3:30am (French Time) - Disembark the Ferry We then had about 3 hours of night driving on the deserted motorways of northern France - fast but DULL. The only enjoyment to be had was the synchronised high-speed overtaking of lorries. 6:30am P...

Rome...?

... didn’t even really resist. They knew the status to being ’Roman’ and that it would bring them instant infrastructure, roads, money, etc.

But enough of all this Roman talk - we’re in France after all! Italy will come when we set sail tomorrow night. For now we’re dining on our last few snipits of cheese, provincial bread and aioli sauce.

... to wander around this town ad see the exact places that are pictured in famous works. It’s amazing how much closer you can feel to a person just knowing you’ve been to the same places. But of course, 120 years later things have changed. Buildings are gone, skylines have changed, and 20th century influence is everywhere! Not quite as romantic ...

Sur le Pont etc

Curse the Mistral - it has been blowing for 3 days non stop and it is gale force and freezing cold. It appears to have abated slightly this afternoon and our local guide informed us that it stops after either 3 days, 6 days or 9 days so we are hopeful. Last night it ws like sleeping under a jet ready for take off all night. Poor Big Mama got rocked around and it takes a lot to move her. A big ...

Nimes and Avignon

Today we are off to Nimes and Avignon via the Pont du Gard aqueduct. Nimes is a beautiful city. Very clean. They have a few Roman remains to be seen. The Maison Carree, a temple, the Arenes or arena and the Tour Magne, an old watch tower. We hit the Maison Carree and the Arenes. In the Maison Carree they show a 3D movie about the important people of Nimes. The Arenes is still used today for bull fights ...

Touring with the Folks in France!

... du Gard next, which is a Roman Viaduct, obviously used in Roman Times to transport water, but is very much a tourist attraction nowadays! It is pretty amazing actually & well worth a visit - very much intact & in great surroundings! After a drink in the restaurant overlooking it, we headed straight to Avignon as our bellies were getting very hungry by this point, but we couldn't face the thought of another sweet - for the moment anyway! As we ...

... by the "armour" and weapons they used. The arena became a castle in the 1200's, then later houses were built inside the arena. Those who lived on the inside did not mix with those who lived on the outside. Although the arena looks large, it was hard to imagine a whole city on the inside. Anyway, that's all on Nimes...we would return there in the blink of an eye...and it is not even too far from the ocean with apparently an amazing aquaduct that we missed seeing.

South to Nîmes and sunshine

While doing some research on the Internet, I came across what might be a wonderful Feast site for us. So instead of driving straight to Switzerland today, I made a detour down to Provence. The site is in La Grande Motte and tomorrow morning I'll visit it before I head back north to Geneva. I was going to take the day off and just rest, but this site looks interesting enough that I thought it worth the detour ...
