Yanagawa City/ Dazaifu

... the way back to stop in a place called Dazaifu. It is famous for a beautiful shrine as well as a popular sweet - a type of baked mochi filled with red bean paste. We stopped for some ice coffee and green tea and some mochi, then browsed through a few local souvenir shops. We rode the train back to Fukuoka, arriving back after 6 pm. We said goodbye to Kazuko who took the bus to her home while Haruyo and the 3 of us took a different bus back to Hakata ...

... of Kumamoto, it was extremely interesting and the workmanship is a credit to all involved. It is also the largest wooden structure of its kind in Japan.

On the way out we looked at the Shachi-no-mon Gate which still has bullet holes visible from the 1838 Battle of Saga. There is also part of the 70 metre wide moat, which once encircled the castle, still visible, as well as some old steps and castle walls.

Well worth a visit.

When our lovely bus driver, who had looked after us at each pit stop, making sure we knew the time to be back on the bus by writing down the time for us both times, nodded to us from his seat that this was our stop, we did feel we were in the middle of nowhere. ... it's easy to miss that depending on where the train stops along the platform, the sun angle, or if somebody has closed the window curtains to block the sun. At night, it's very hard to see the signs from the train. And some of the signs have faded from the sun so you can't read them. At the Karatsu Station, there was an electric sign listing the platforms for each train. I waited and waited for ...
