A Day (or two) in the Life of Benita

... it together! That's how we drove down the mountain...
It is fine though as I haven't actually been car sick, just incredibly shocked at the speed some of these drives take corners that look like they actually just fall off the side of a cliff. Regardless we arrived safely, and I Heard it, I could hear the ocean as we strolled towards a fenced off area high above the sea. Where we inadvertently interrupted some moments of passion for a young couple canoodling on ...

Back to the Roots

... family, and seeing the little things that remind me of family. True to Italian/Family form, I am here, being loved and cared for just as if they've known me all my life. (I have arrived at my Zio/Uncle Ciccio's home in Sant'Onofrio in Calabria). But comes with the good, here is where frustration lies for me. Why do I focus so ******* what people are trying to share with me, to the point of giving myself a splitting ...

South Italy-My holiday in Calabria, Tropea

Calabria, the toe of Italy is still an insider tip for individual travelers.

My first vacation in Calabria took me to the West Coast, at the Tyrrhenian Sea, known for its romantic landscape, the almost Caribbean-like sandy beaches and the crystal blue sea.

This magical region of southern Italy has much to offer and the international airport of Lamezia Terme in the center of Calabria is the starting point for my holidays, where I took ...

... of teenage girls sitting in their chairs outside their homes doing lacework just chatting away and we couldn't help but comment about how young they were. We expected to see older ladies sitting there doing that, but we suspect tradition is fully imbued in their normal daily activities in San Giorgio. We walked all of the way up to the medieval castle at the top of the town and noticed an incredible amount of construction work. It seems as ...

The Deep South (of Italy)

... ferry and it will delay us too long to stay another day, so we push on to the Gargano, which is like a big growth on the back of the calf of Italy (look at the map and you will see what I mean). We drive along these beautiful but interminably windy roads and eventually arrive at Vieste, the main town. In the morning we sally forth and nearby we see these beautiful white cliffs, and faraglione (rocky vertical outcrops in the sea). We take a cruise along the coast, which has ...

Tropea - I had no idea!

... the weather was just perfest for swimming. What an amazing place! Also fortunately it isn't one of the places in Italy taken over by tourists so the town is very down to earth and not full of all these flashy hotels and restaurants like we found on Capri. While we were driving along one day we saw a sign saying this way to the site where Jesus appeared in 1932 and again at ...

The Italian language

... him into "the father" of the Italian language. Latin continued to be used alongside the vernacular for many centuries to come. Then in 1800, with Alessandro Manzoni, came the linguistic unification of Italy and the Italian language was born - a new language that was not literary but commonplace and comprehensible to all. Italian is ...

The Hunt for the La Praia Hotel

... search we stopped off at a gas station to ask for directions. The directions that Danielle managed to piece together pointed us in the direction north of the city and off we went, we did manage to find a hotel, but it was not the La Praia. One turn led to another and soon we found ourselves in the heart of the old streets of Tropea, barely wide enough for our small Ford Festiva to fit in. At one point we stopped ...

With the family in CALABRIA! Sant'Onofrio & more
