Yesterday we stopped in Bari, Italy. There were a lot of excursion options but we decided to do our own city tour. As soon as we entered the city we noticed the streets were blocked off and there were bails of hay in the corners. We had no clue what was about to happen but we had fun guessing. I obviously wanted to see a crazy parade and Mike thought it was a bike race. We were both wrong it was a classic car show with Ferraris and ...

... the roofs of the trulli. Alberobello refers to the oak trees that were used to make weapons. The area used to be covered in the oaks. They were “live” oaks never completely shedding their leaves.

Strangely, their trulli, across a small courtyard from ours, was still dark several minutes after 9. Finally I went over and knocked on the door... and the lazy bones were still in bed! How dare they do such a thing while on vacation :-) Luckily, today was billed as a slightly shorter ride, so after a quick breakfast of yogurt, fruit, pastries ...

Up early for breakfast and at the bike briefing by 8:30, where Marco, our guide from girolibero, introduced us and probably another 12-18 bikers to our tour and our bikes. People from all over - Germany, New Zealand, England, France and New Hampshire. We got all fitted for our bikes then went back to pack up before heading out by about10:30 from Matera.  Several early stops to do a bit more bike adjusting but by 5 km, we settled into ...

Woke to blue sky but still a cold wind. Such a pretty location to stay in with all the trulli houses, vines, olive trees, small stone fences and white washed houses. Packed up and headed onto Locorotondo to have a little look around. Once again the old part was just a small part of a very large town so quite stressful for Craig negotiating the streets and then finding a car park. Pretty quiet ...
