Woke at 7am to our church bells but had a quiet start as we did not have to meet till 10am. Blue skies and warm. We had breakfast then I went shopping with Carol and the other girls in a tiny deli that sold all local meats, cheeses, oils, green tomato paste etc. the others all tried out their Italian while I asked Carol to order our sandwich. We drove to Corfinio where we sat in the main piazza and had coffee before visiting a monastery ...

... was also wonderful with two of the best pastas I have ever tasted. While we were there, a man walked in with trays of fresh Porcini mushrooms that he had just picked. They were on one of our pastas. Some then shared a plate of baked mushrooms that were like small pieces of meat. Throw in the usual ceramic jug of local rough red and an espresso and lunch was complete......again. Derek asked for a caffe Americano (long black) ...

... grappa with different flavoured sugars and liqueurs to add. We were so full we were uncomfortable. All the food was home grown, even the meat. Just superb. They charged Carol 20 euro a head!! It would be 100 dollars at home at least. She paid them 25 euro. Bit of a walk then a short drive to Sulmona where we are staying for the last three nights. Hotel Rojan is lovely and our room is spacious with a great bathroom. ...

... a campsite just outside Pescasseroli heading towards what in winter is the ski station. The weather is hot and sunny and after siesta, we walked back towards the town centre to have a mooch around and find the tourist information centre. Pescasseroli isn't perched on a hill but is still pretty enough in its own way. It seems to be mainly geared up for the ski season. The tourist information was closed so we had an ice cream and headed back to the campsite.

... and then they just got in the cars and drove away. The trip and tour was very interesting but a long day. We learned of the history of the four battles, New Zealand was only involved in the last two. Lots of history lessons including been shown a small village which was abandoned and never rebuilt. It's occupants fled to and lived in caves in the middle of winter to escape the Germans. We walked through the caves in a stooped fashion ...
