After 6:15am Mass we got on the bus to go to Monte Cassino. The Abbey for the Benedictines is there. We went up the mountain to the Abbey and had a great tour. The story of the rock is that St. Benedict fell and God made the rock soft so his arm print is there. St. Scholastica liked doves and when she died St. Benedict saw doves. Boiled the kettle (aka saucepan) for our first cup of tea. It's cold!! The rain only got heavier, so we decided to give the ride a miss and go for a Wienerschnitzel instead! After lunch we walked to another cafe to use their wifi. We started with hot chocolate and apple strudel, and finished with a beer! Bring back the hot days and balmy ...

We had a platter of cheese, speck, crackers, carrots and apple for dinner, followed by our local Dolomites yoghurt. It's cold tonight!! Almost need to invest in a hot water ...
We drove on for 15 minutes to a place called Raiano where we had a fabulous picnic lunch next to an old hermitage built over a stream in a picturesque gorge. The food was really tasty and very Italian. Carol had a swim in the chilly stream then we moved on to the Abbey of the Holy Spirit about 15 minutes out of Suloma and on the site of where Pope Celestine V founded ...
