Welcome to sarajevo

... away while travelling through Sarajevo. It was a nice place. There was a signature cat cartoon graffiti that I found all over the city which I took some photos of, quite random and quirky! But it was the Turkish quarters that I stayed in most, we spent our time wandering around, ducking in for food or a Bosnian coffee (complete with Turkish delight), and just loving it there.

Despite it being chilly and overcast and often raining throughout our stay, and ...

Sarajevo & Bosnia: Big problems with corruption

... which have a clear menu card. But even this is not safe: after one dinner it happened that a waiter said that the menu card was outdated. And then the struggle begins...

Many of the hostels owners i spoke with and Bosnian friends i know say the country is ill. "Corruption is even higher than in Albania" Said one of them. I just hope the people in Bosnia will realize ripping off tourists is not the right thing to do to fulfill the country money needs. (taxes are ...

Stunning Sarajevo

... after reading my experience, you can form your perception about the city not for what it was 15 years ago, but for what it is now. This city has suffered, you can see that by walking two blocks in any direction. But its come out of its dark past to turn itself into a magnificent cocktail of metropolitan city lights and the historical preservation of all destruction that has been documented by every news channel around the globe.

Sarajevo is a city thats built in a ...

A day in Sarajevo

... who works at the hostel. For people who dont know Sarajevo is surronded by hills and for 4 years from 91 to 95 the whole city was surronded and under attack by the Serbs as they placed there artilary on the hills and had snippers all over the hills just picking off people as they were running around the city. The 4 years is actually a record for the longest underseige attack in history where the city was bombared for 4 years straight. Could you just imagine that 4 years of your ...

Free Cornflakes, War Damage, and Snowy Mosques

... who must have come from the english part, topped off our little quartet, and we watched some movie, I now pronounce you Chuck and Larry. Found out I could only handle so much of Will Ferrel. The next day was one of full on blogging. Think I got at least two entries in. I really should make these things shorter and start to do more sightseeing, but the longer you travel, the more tired you get. Home will be a nice break between traveling. Ended up ...

... perseesta. Perjantai meni kierrellessa vahan laajemmalla alueella. Sarajevo on kylla erittain mielenkiintoinen kaupunki. Tuskin mistaan muualta loytyy vierekkain ortodoksikirkkoa, katolilaisten vastaavaa, moskeijaa ja juutalaisten synagogaa. Lisaksi sodan tuhoamat rakennukset (vanhat rintamalinjat huomaa aika helposti), kommunistiajan betonihirviot, uudet pilvenpiirtajat ja vanhat muslimiajan ja Itavalta-Unkarin takaiset rakennukset luovat mielenkiintoisen ja varmasti aika ainutlaatuisen ...

My Birthday in Sarajevo

... Some of these had filled with water and had frozen overnight. The girls took delight in running along and breaking the ice on the top of the frozen bullet-hole-puddles. The irony of this wasn't lost on me. We crossed the Latin Bridge, site of the assassination of the Archduke Ferdinand, the event that kicked off the First World War. Having just come from Gallipoli this had even greater significance. Despite ...

Trouble a-brewin'

... trying to avoid the appearance of massive desperation which would have been the wholly accurate response. Stroke of luck: for 20 euro we got a private house to ourselves, in the heart of the old town, two doors down from the British Ambassador's residence. Sure it took us three days to figure out the hot water, but overall it was a huge win. No invite around for cucumber sandwiches with the Ambassador either. Our first step to learning more of the city's ...
