... Registan, although, as far as I’ve heard, the square is the most impressive site.

Returning to the hotel, we checked email, then Paul and the kids went out for dinner. I joined them around 9pm, and we walked to the Registan to see if it were lit up (as we could see that they were installing lights up). It was not really lit, which was sad, so we returned to the hotel and had a glass of wine, then went to bed.

There were no free tables in the cafe but a couple ladies motioned for us to sit with them. ... complete disarray – saved only by the dogged persistence, persuasive powers and last minute rearrangements effected by Victoria, our excellent local guide. The next morning all streets were reopened and my cell phone suddenly burst into life – phone service first, followed a few hours later by Internet access.

... Medrassa was certainly the more striking of the two we entered. Influences included Egyptian, Chinese and Jewish.

The principal influence on the Taj Mahal was Humayun's Tomb in present day New Delhi. In turn, the guiding spirt for Humayun's Tomb was the mausoleum built for Timur.

Lunch followed after 1340. There was no cook available but had a decent lamb and apricot stew 20,000 US. The tour concluded at Timur's Mausoleum. Dennis, Dave and I cabbed it back ...

Big day on the tourist trail for us with visits to the 'must sees'. Same weather as usual with not a cloud to be seen and temperatures in the 30ish. The photos of Registan one has seen are obviously fantastic but when you walk around you still find it hard to be truly awed. Must be because of the sterile setting. Again pedestrian boulevards with six lanes. Grass constantly watered and people tending those enormous areas. The buildings in which people lived ...
