Keflavik!

We'll its official, we arrived at exactly 6:05 GMT this morning 10/19/08 and the current temperature is 2 degrees Celsius. We are 8 hours ahead of MST and 7 hours ahead of CST. As we descended on the plane, you begin to smell a distinct sulfur smell, a by-product of geothermal gasses released from the earth. The smell dissipates in about an hour and you can no longer smell it! Thank Goodness! We received a free upgrade for our rental car and are driving a 4x4 Hyundai with seat warmers and all...

... that this tube, we will have to crawl at one point to get into it. He now provides us with coveralls. Great, I haven't had but one tour out of 4 where I wasn't given something to wear besides my own clothes.<br><br> There is a set of steps leading down to the cave/lava tube. We also have on hard hats with a light on it and gloves. I'm taking my camera in it's underwater housing to protect it.<br><br> OK, I can go up and down stairs usually but it's been a long time, No wait, it's ...

... that the UN's Global Peace Index recently rated Iceland #1 for happiness and the most favorable nation in the world to live in. So we asked Kristina.....why? After a thoughtful silence she said that geographically and population (approx. 300,000) wise, Iceland is small and homogenous, facilitating and encouraging people to care about each other. Iceland is small enough that people are listed alphabetically in the telephone book by their first names! The ...

... our rental car seeing all the major sites like the original Geyser (its actually called Geyser), Gulfoss falls, and some of the largest glaciers in the world. After three nights camping, we were all ready to leave Iceland (the second most expensive country in the world behind Japan) and journey back to somewhere a little more cosmopolitan. Pictures are forthcoming, we promise!

... was easily the best in my life. And guess what the French tour groups bring: grilled salmon, roasted yam. One evening as I was laying in bed in the mountain hut chewing my dried fish, could not stop laughing when I overheard one fellow declaring the next course being cheese from north of spain! Word of caution: be aware of rivers, do not wade through one when no one is present, the last river before porsmork is strong and you can fall and really risk your life! The locals warned me more than once.

Reykjavik and the Blue Lagoon

This was the last day of our trip and we were sad to leave. After getting up and eating cereal in our room we walked around the town a bit more. We shopped some and then stopped by the Reykjavik 871 museum. This was sort of interesting....it a a museum with the foundation of an old Viking longhouse inside so the museum tells the story of the Viking life. It was raining again so we sort of gave up on doing anything else and grabbed some ...

... be a few references to this type of stuff throughout the trip! Still looking for food we ended up in Reykjavik at the Perlan which is a huge water tower complex high on a hill overlooking the city with a museum, viewing deck, restaurant, and cafe inside. There wasn't much choice of food but we got 2 egg and cheese sandwiches, a belgian waffle (I HAD to see if they were anything like the delicious ones from Belgium), apple juice (Epli juice), and a ...

... After dumping our bags we headed into town to try and catch a grocery store before it shut, there was none anywhere! The bus ride into town which was about 45mins from the airport was just baron, rocky volcanic land covered in snow, and white as far as we could see, and in the main shopping streets in town they use underground pipes with water coming up from the springs to keep it ice and snow free. Weather was it was freezing, mainly -7 but the night we went to ...

... stews. So to finally go and see everything is a huge release. So this whole entire year trip has been a big relief in a way, no kidding, I sleep way better. I need the map to become real. I need to be able to look at a map and have a visual of the place, what the supermarkets look like, the topography, the houses. Anyway....Iceland! A very relaxed place of farmers and fisherman. People are Danish looking and have a similar style, clean ...

Waiting at Keflavík airport
