Today we left Vienna to travel to Budapest in Hungary. Lots of crops of maize and sunflowers along the way, and much hay being made as well. The border crossing between Austria and Hungary occurs without incident, but the bus travellers are warned not to change too much money into the Hungarian currency, the forint, as any unused currency will not be changeable back to Euros at the end of the visit. The Hungarian money has little value anywhere other than in Hungary. Budapest is an interestin...
Budapest, Hungary shrubberiesIt's taken a while, but we are starting to get the hang of the risks you can and can't take, travelling in foreign countries. At the enormous market hall in Budapest (or, more accurately, in Pest), I was intrigued by an Italian looking gentleman, who was drinking a shot of something alcoholic with his coffee, after lunch. On further investigation, he revealed it was grappa, which I think is a grape-based Italian brandy. Romano explained he was from Switzerland, and was visiting Budapest to ge...

... amount of the people we met there were students from Budapest. 1 of the guys we met offered to take us out and show us around a bit so after meeting at his apartment and meeting his roommate the four of us went out for supper. Eastern Europe defiantly knows how to do meat; even I’ve been enjoying it!! After dinner we joined some other people and played pool and foseball before heading over to Szimpla. Szimpla is a "kurt" bar. Kurt bars are bars that are set up in ...
Budapest, Hungary ktchris... the idea of that is the Gragoyle. I then found the palament house. what an amazing piece of architecture. You will have to wait for the photos. But explaining it was almost gothical. There wasn´t any collumns, or straight walls, there were points and the middle dome was 96 meters high because that the year it was built. the palament itself took 17 years to build. The man that designed it, even though didnt live to see the finished product ...
Budapest, Hungary nat_in_a_hat... lovely buildings and at the spectacular views, especially of the Parliament, until we decided it was time for a bite to eat. At the Cafe Miro, we had goulash soup and potato soup and shared a Hungarian specialty sponge "cake" that was more like a trifle, except without the custard. We walked around the Royal Palace from the outside, then took the funicular back down and went back across the Danube, which seemed to have much less ice floating in it than in the ...
Budapest, Hungary penny71... that status he had to complete a rather colourful internship which included such perks as bishop's tenure in 11th century and consecutive martyrdom in the form of being sealed into a barrel and hurled off into the Danube. The monument was allegedly erected precisely on the spot from which they irrevocably had once sent him into the sainthood down the river. And then we descended again to the Erzsébet híd, or Elizabeth Bridge, and crossed the Danube. This bridge is situated ...
Budapest, Hungary the_wayfarer... Having amused ourselves muchly, wilting from the heat, and vowing to return to this city which has been the highlight of the trip so far, we climbed into the car to head east once more. After a few hours we arrived in Budapest, 1500 miles from home, ready to prepare for the centre-piece of our trip, the week-long Sziget festival. We're staying in a nice hotel and preparing ourselves for 7 nights of festival camping in the tremendous heat. More updates soon if we survive...
Budapest, Hungary simon_and_tess... that you could look out over the Danube and over to the impressive parliament building and the Pest side of the city. It is cool that in Budapest as well as Prague there are some hills in the city where you can look out over other parts of the city. However in Vienna, it is all flat except for some hills in the distance, so you don't get this opportunity. After we took in the views ,we went to two museums. The first was an armory museum that showed the weapons of Hungary ...
Budapest, Hungary rbailer... public transit system, plus a great arts scene. Right now there is a free film festival going on at the parliament building, and there are all kinds of concerts besides Clapton. The local specialty for food is goulash, which you can get at hole-in-the wall cafes as well as fancy restaraunts. I will be eating at an outdoor cafe on the Danube shortly.
Budapest, Hungary debde-lish... challenge my body. During one of my exquisite 4 days in Budapest I strolled around Margit Island. I sat by the musical fountain for over an hour just enjoying the sun and contemplating life. I brought a small picnic and watched the water in the fountain dance in time with the classical music that played in the background. The sun was shinning and the weather was perfect. On my last night in Budapest I decided to do something I love but never have the ...
