We set off early from Beaune to start the drive to the Loire Valley. Our first stop was Chateau de Chambord. This huge palace was first built by Francis I, King of France at the time that Henry VIII was King of England. Ben noticed that the castle had a moat and inside a special winding staircase (a double helix). On the ceiling, Ben and Jon noticed a fire breathing lizard (a salamander which was the emblem of Francis) and big letter ...

One of the important things about choosing the emplacement at the campsite is how near the toilets are from your pitch. Our toilets and showers are about 15 yards away. Pretty close! So this morning I was lying in bed listening to Today holding tight so as not to disturb Sue. Couldn't wait any more and dashed out of the tent only to find that the toilets were closed for cleaning. We are booked in at a campsite for the last few days at Sangatte. It was cheap but got very good reviews on Somalian ...

... a levee. We really like that, as the surface is smooth, and it's easy riding. But today we also rode through beautiful wooded areas, and along tracks that were gravelly, beside the river. The wooded tracks are beautifully cool when it's hot, but there are clouds of little thrip type insects that stick to my lip gloss, and I have to have a bit of a wipe off now and then. We have both swallowed a few ( hundred) too. As it was Sunday, a couple of the small ...

We woke to a beautiful morning and crossed over the Loire, with the early sun making the river look like molten silver. We arrived at the magnificent Chateau Chambord. As the ride had taken us less time than we expected we were there well before opening hours, and were able to take our photos without anybody else in them. The wealth of the aristocrats was something to behold, no wonder there was a revolution. Thankfully these ...
