Jakarta, Java, Indonesia maprudencioJakarta. A seething mass of smog, people, cars, bajaj (pronounced bajai, these three wheeled rickshaw things). But I'm getting ahead of myself. Back in Jogja, on Wednesday, I went to the train station to book a ticket for the next day. The Indonesian method of selling train tickets remains outside my comprehension, so I asked an American looking guy for some help. He spoke fluent English, and gave me some advice, and after ...
Jakarta, Java, Indonesia jaeleli... opened the gate to my old house and stepped into the past. My aunt looked at me and she was surprised because I didn't tell anyone that I was coming. I gave her a hug and she told me, "You are so big!" My cousins, so many of them, Ucok, Andi, Kristin, Julius, Dear, Ucok kecil, Dede, and jun-jun greeted me. They are so big now and some were born after I left for America. I looked around the old house, going through each room searching for lost memories. Nothing has really changed in ...
Jakarta, Indonesia carpediem291... be if they were in the same awkward situation as us (especially Michael "burns" Friedich though). Enough though, time to fly and get bored and sleep, and become cranky and spend my rupiah, rhinget, baht and dollars before I have a pocket full of worthless change back in the states. Hope to see all or at least most of my peeps before the next episode begins again. P.S. OBAMA '08, I always new that Texas couldn't be trusted!
Jakarta, Indonesia bassmanms... the country. The people we met were very kind (despite the taxi driver who drove us for 2 hours in a circle), and the Nasional Museum is great. The old Dutch area was a nice place to stop by, if a bit dirty. We only spent a day in the big city as we had our hearts set on other sights, but the 30 degree weather was a very welcome change, and in spite of it being the rainy season, we saw very little.
Jakarta, Indonesia fisebPicture this: A 10ft square room. Three blacked out windows. No fresh air. No bathroom. No blankets. Two single beds. Two very hungover men producing copious amounts of exhaust. That is what Sean and I woke up to this morning. We are now in Jakarta, Indonesia, staying in a hostel that is uncomparable to anything I have every endured. On the bottom floor there is about 5 or 6 resident hookers that try to lure us into their ...
Jakarta, Java, Indonesia matpatterson99... Sometimes it's hard to tell if it's getting dark because night is closing in, or if mist is rolling down the mountains, darkening the sky. No matter; if you are tired, just sleep. Sometimes rubber time can be frustrating for a Westerner like me, because we are so used to being ruled by the clock. Our people are known here to always be in too much of a rush--we want everything now, now, now. On our first day in Medan, we stopped in ...
Bukit Lawang, Indonesia wendyworldWe arrived in Bali late at night and having trouble finding a cheap little guest house we checked into a hotel, our first experience of luxury!! Costing $10 a night for aircon, t.v, BATH and balcony it was worth every penny. Only for a few a days before we found a cheap and cheerful guesthouse. Kuta is very busy, made of many small streets packed with market stalls, restaurants and nightlife its a real tourist town, but still ...
Kuta, Indonesia leithandjim... when the holiday is over. The holiday lasts for a month. They use sailboats to move lumber and concrete between Jakarta and sumatra. If you want to meet a group of people NOT against clear cutting of the rainforest, they're it. If you sink a boat in the harbor, don't count on having it moved any time soon. They'll just use it as a bench.
