... town, but we enjoyed window shopping, strolling through the park that circles the Lac du Annecy, and people watching. This weekend is the Fete du Lac Annecy, which apparently is the biggest thing that happens here all year. The set-up was intense and consumed the town-special parking, special highway exits, a laser light show in the middle of the lake (no joke-we saw them rehearsing), and an influx of tourists.

... us and it was fun to get acquainted through our collective French and English. Afterward, Claire had to go off to her horse riding lessons and Carole had to return to work, but not before giving us a quick orientation to Annecy and the lake front.  Annecy is a beautiful old city dating back to the Romans at the end of a huge glacial carved lake of the same name.  The water front is ringed by pedestrian and bike paths, and lots of sunbathers on the many beaches. ...

Today we climbed the HC category Le Semnoz (ski field) climb. It was quoted at 16km at 7% but had some significant sections at 8 - 10%. The view at the top was amazing with Mont Blanc visible across Lake Annecy. Next day we travelled on through the Vendee and Charente Maritime regions with an evening stay at Rochefort. A very interesting town, haunt of Cardinal Richilieu, and built as a naval defence base by Louis XIV. Much more our style, because it was small enough to walk about admiring the historic buildings and to see the pleasure harbour, and small commercial port. And it's the French home of oysters... Which they grade and sell like good ...
