... and got some fresh hot waffles, shaped like the Cathedral with melted chocolate on, and some delicious Stollen. It was a one hour drive to Vaals / Holland. A cute little town. We had dinner at Mo'ment, an interesting little resturant. Duck was the speciality. Matt had huge ribs and H a vegetarian lasagna. Hotel Kasteel Bloemendal Vaals was where we stayed and it was lovely. 18C restored manor house, and we were in the renovated wing.

Thee caves were actually quarry caves where the limestone was removed by farmers and used in local buildings and also the Church domes. This tour was also by gas light and our guide left us in the darkness for a few moments just to experience true darkness. Although we only walked for 1 hour in the cave system it's ...

... am not even mentioning the Roman colony or the prehistoric eras before that!

So it's one of those place that any history geek must visit. In practice, the middle of the winter isn't that good an idea: it rains often, everything is grey and the days are short so possible activities are limited. But luckily there is one point that makes up for all the negative aspects of the season: the Christmas market! Ooooh do I love Christmas markets in Germany... :D
