    ... we met and then came back...not a lot to be said for this area except the Port and Shipping Canal was something to see but being on the A1, stopping to take pictures of massive container ships being load or unloaded as well as sailing under very high bridges may not the be the local Polizie's idea of sight seeing!

    ... highlights of our little tour was when we stopped at one of the stalls that was selling candle light covers of various designs. One in particular had a design of sailing ships and lighthouses to which Johanna's mother exclaimed "Urgh, so typisch Norddeutsch"....having experienced as much of Germany as I had, this internal joke reminiscent of England's North-South divide gave me a warm chuckle.

    ... especially the churches--survived heavy Allied bombing by virtue of their status as landmarks for the airplanes high overhead, but the smaller buildings, including many in the Schnoor and Böttcherstraße, were all but destroyed in the later years of WWII; we saw many dates inscribed in lintels above doorways that read from the 1950s when the city was rebuilding, a reminder that the war was fought here too and not just around the bombed out buildings of London or ...
