Montenegro, the newest country in the world

... smoke until our next shower.

In our 4 months of traveling over the last year, this was the first time we took a train ride in a real sleeper cabin. It was a tiny room (6’L x 6’W x maybe 8’ H) with two triple bunk beds. We had the middle two bunks on each side. Two other men had the bunks below us and no one was on the very top. It was cool because the cabin provides us all sheets, pillows with pillow ...

Ulcinj - Relax by the ocean

Then we traveled down to Ulcinj – the town with many great beaches, nice old town, healthy pine forests, churches and mosques. The Turks ruled there for over 300 years, and today the town shelters many Muslim Albanians. We spent time resting and walking, breathing in the small from ...

Waiting for an early bus

... It ended up being a private bus as no one else wanted to go to Albania that day. The border was easy to cross, though on the Albanian side we did have to get out to pay our 10 Euro entrance fee and answer a couple of questions from the border guards. My favorite part of the border crossing was the quizzical response from the border guard when I said we were going to Tirana - "But why?"

Ulcinj, Montenegro

8/4 It was really wonderful to fly back to Dubrovnik with so many great memories from the trip last summer with Ruben and Lee. It was also sad since I wish they were with me again since it would be so much more fun. I had decided to visit Montenegro first and then come back to Dubrovnik later on my trip. The busses to Montenegro don't stop at the airport despite going right past it so I had to take a taki to the main bus station in town. Along the way I kept ...

Half an Albanian breakfast

... time of year, but single figures with typically local Balkan features. It made me think that perhaps these cars have all simply been stolen by gangs and brought to Albania in the way that loads of mopeds were in the 90s. Might there be a reward for finding stolen motors in this way?! As I was driven into Dubrovnik yesterday, the Croatian taxi driver was getting exasperated behind a slow moving brand new Albanian registered Range Rover Sport. The Croatian ...

Last stop in Montenegro

Down to the final leg off my jaunt through Montenegro, and I'm now sitting in the small semi-resort town of Ulcinj. It's situated only about 20km in from the Albanian border, but from the looks of things and the population itself it might as well be Albania. Mosques are suddenly dotting the landscape, fewer people around are speaking Serbian to each other, and the signs are typically bilingual or just in Albanian. Apparently 90% of Ulcinj's population is ...

No rest for the wicked

... from nearly all sides of its old walls. The site was inhabited for well over a thousand years and would probably be quite an attractive place still today. Unfortunately, the town was pulverized by Montenegrin artillery in the late 19th century when it was being retaken from the Turks. They never completely rebuilt the place and then the 1979 earthquake - the same one that badly rattled Budva, Ulcinj and, in Albania, Shkodra - leveled a lot of the rest ...

Jumping Around

... No English!" he says. And points to the mountain. So i try the only ticket window next to him. I say "English?" she says "yes" I say "Bus to albania?" She says firmly in a Russian firmness "No". I say "How do i get to Albania?" She just shrugged her shoulders. Great. Hung out with Kirsten first night. Second day i walked around town and headed up the mountain to the fortress. Was like the great wall of china. Not an easy hike i must say. Took me about an hour of ...

... drag. After apparently featuring in a medieval film starring Sean Connery in the 60s (can't remember the name), the old town was completely destroyed by earthquake in 1979. Since then it has been faithfully recreated and looks surprisingly genuine - as new friend Ruth commented, the most artificial aspect is actually the smooth paving and grills ...

Dr. Kovach and Croatia

... no americans were really there...and we hit it before it has fully recovered, yet is safe for travel... We took a bus from Sarajevo to Dubrovnik on the Croatian Adriatic coast...the ride, although long, gave us an even better look at the amazingly beautiful bosnian country...it really is terrible that the country is marred by war after war as I can see how it was once an amazing place...as we moved closer to Croatia the cities in bosnia seemed to get worse and worse ...
