First port of call: Dubrovnik

(Whitney)

We boarded the ship at about 2pm and went first to our room (very big because we got a wheelchair room) and then went to have some lunch. We could not get over the spread of food! We both had quite a bit to eat and then wandered around the ship and hung out by the pool as we sailed away from Venice. We had a wonderful dinner and went to see the "welcome aboard" show in the evening and then headed to bed. So nice to ...

... were booked in every campground, kayaking and canyoning are not offered on the weekends (according to each of the FIVE tourist agencies I went to), and the major ferries only offer service to the most popular islands once a day from Split which means I would not have been able to make it back to the ship on time on the final day. On the bright side, when we got to the city, Split was entertaining and there was plenty to see on the first day ...

... enough and I enjoyed wandering around the narrow stone alleys in the old city. The hostel lady said my bike would be safe left outside for the night as Croatians "were too lazy to ride bikes and preferred mopeds". This indeed seemed the case as every youngster in town was buzzing around on their mopeds like wasps to honey, so I took her advice and just left the bike in the street. Needless to say, it was still there in the morning!

A big catch up - Mostar and Dubrovnik

... meal and some crepees for dessert. Party animals that we are we were in bed by 7pm. We caught the first bus out the next moring at 7am and after a ridiculous number of passport checks (out of Bosnia, into Croatia, then into anbd out of Bosnia along the coast, and finially into Croatia again). I'm certainly collecting lots of stamps! We arrived in Dubrovnik to several pushy people offering us accomodaiton, but we declined and walked to the YHA ...

... and I didn't want to have to eat my latkes with sour cream - yuck!). Malka was very interested in what I was making and had me explain the significance to her a couple of times. She was a bit apprehensive about trying them, but seemed to like them once she finally did taste one. Monday brought more rain, more relaxing, and also more time walking around the Old Town, seeing things one last time before my bus into Montenegro on Tuesday.

Motoring Through Montenegro

... don't want to have a heart attack here. The climb was, again, long and hot in the bright sun, but the view was worth it, and it was heaps of fun exploring around the fortress ruins that ran along the top of the hill. We had a picnic lunch on the hill top, looking out over the harbour filled with Super Yaghts and buildings that reminded us of the new James Bond movie, before finishing our explorations and winding our way back down. We had just ...

... register us to the government, so we do not get fined or deported. Nice bonus. We got the room for 100 kuna (15 euros, 20 USD), then got a second day and haggled down to 90 kuna each (Kristin is getting good at this. We made it and it is very beautiful. The rooms has a kitchen, bathroom and balcony looking over new town port, but is a 20-30 minute walk to old town. Croatia is very nice. Not really sure ...

Ferry down the Dalmatian Coast to Dubrovnik

... to handle even greater numbers. In Auschwitz some of the barracks have been turned into museums and monuments from the different countries that had its citizens held here. The two things about this day that stand out was first the size of Birkenau. Imagine like 6-7 football fields layed side by side and that is about how big it is. The other were the exhibits on display. In one barracks they displayed items found when the Russians liberated the camp. In this room, behind glass, were ...

Not long after the Venetians moved in and exerted their control and it wasn't until the 14th century that they got the boot, allowing Dubrovnik to trade with just about every country on the Mediterranean.
