Diving in Dahab, Red Sea, Egypt

... time and it was fine. She replied that she couldn’t possibly let them walk home on their own. Oh my, this pampering will have to stop or the Ryan and Mitchell will become accustomed to it.

On the last night we invited our Diving Instructors, Kai. Ahmed and Mohamed to have dinner with us at our favourite eating place. We had a great night with them. Dahab has been a very social place and we thrived on it.

We also became very aware of ...

The Valley of the Kings

... was not open. It has been closed for the last 9 years as it was becoming damaged by the thousands of tourists visiting every year. It is considered to be the most impressive of all of the tombs that have been discovered in Egypt so it’s a pity we could not see it.

After the Valley of the Queens, we jumped on a boat to get across the river more quickly as the road is a long way round back to our hotel. Our group got on 2 motor boats but as we were ...

You want to sleep in my cave?

... I take pity, yet could never come even close to this disclosure.

But , too, there is much warmth and wit. Horsemen offer their steeds for the long uphill ride back to Wadi Musa: “nice Ferrari, use my Mercedes Benz, don’t walk, my car is 4x4”.

Pony traps take the mickey, back along the Siq, proving themselves the most expensive taxi rides on the planet. 40 euro (approx US$50) between 2 passengers for 1.7km! One can take a taxi across Hong Kong, for 30km ...

Aswan to Luxor to Dahab and Mt Sinai (ben)

... a bit of a rush and cost Chill his backsheesh (tip) as we were whipped across to the other side to catch the mini-bus that had been organized to take us to Luxor via Edfu and Esna. We had thought we would be taken up to Kom Ombo as the deal had been, but apparently that was not the case as is often the way when traveling and particularly in Egypt!!

Nevermind though, we jumped in the bus and after some hours driving got to the Temple of Horus at Esna, which is (and i ...

Day 15 | St. Catherine

... it is a huge plus!

The dinner was excellent. We were wondering if it'd just be bread and dips (it is a monastery after all, surely they must keep some food items off the menu) so we were maniacally stuffing ourselves with bread, and then they bring out the chicken and rice.

And after that it was a short 4 hour nap until we woke up at 1:30AM to climb Mt. Sinai. Dun dun dun dun dun.

Friendly Dahab again

... to Sharm where we did our 3rd dive. It had napolian fish the size of me which were very impressive along with hundrds of really big unicorn parrot fish - ive never seen so many - it was a special dive but the current was very strong once again and so we couldnt complete the dive plan - it was still awsome though!

I got back on the land and wanted my sleep after a tiring 3 dives but we had to wait in horrible Sharm for 3 hours as we can not go up in altitude back over the mountains ...

Diving (or not) in Dahab

March 26Dahab grows on you. This is why there are so many westerners here who came for a week and stayed for a year. In the early days, when there were just Bedouins and camels, the intrepid travelers of the hippy era came here (those who couldn't get to Goa). But there was little infrastructure and it wasn't until the 90's that tourism developed to any degree. Now there are restaurants, dive shops, hotels etc and Dahab has become one of the premier diving spots in the world. We ...

What a life here!

... me be. This is my vacation. I just need breathing space. You say I can trust you and only you, but you're no different than any of the rest. It's always something for something. I watch my own back, I don't want anyone trying to make me do things I don't want to do, and if I say no, respect it. That's really all that I ask. Egyptian men.

The rest of today I ignored Hamdi and smoked apple flavored shiisha with some Frenchies. heheh It was great to ...
