          Good for an overnight stay

Comfortable hotel located on the outskirts of town. Room wasn't overly large but good enough for a one night stay. Parking available, wifi worked fairly well, room and bed fairly comfortable. Restaurant wasn't open when we were there but is available other nights. Breakfast was reasonably good with the usual fate available. Would stay again.

Left Udine on Sunday to travel up into Germany (via Austria). We are going to a town in Germany called Passau. No reason for picking it other than its in Bavaria and it is the confluence of 3 rivers, one of which is the Danube. What should have been a fairly leisurely 3 - 4 hour drive turned into a drive of epic proportions.

The sun came out later in the day and you could see the fortress walls and the beautiful stucco. The stucco is mixed with the soil in this area and makes a nice exterior, when it dries they paint it, but when a flood ...

... quite nice, typically fallish - cool in the mornings, sometimes with some thick fog and warming in the afternoon, particularly when it is sunny. We' re seeing highs between 10 and 15 degrees. It has been too cool to stay up on the upper deck because of the wind, mostly generated but the ship's speed. Fortunately we haven't had any rain. Weather in Vienna, Melk and Cesky Krumlov was expectional and with our walking tours we had dressed too warmly.

We arrived in Passau this morning and for MJ and I, it was a bit of a scramble. We overslept and only woke 20 minutes before our departure for the walking tour. A coffee and a pastry and we were good to go.

Passau is known as the city of three rivers, the Danube, Inn and the Ilz meet here. Passau was an interesting centre for the salt trade and the merchants established a powerful monopoly until 1707, when all salt imports to Passau were forbidden and ...
