So April 1st was actually Gaper Day, not Gaybor day... The event started decades ago as a way to show off old ski gear on April Fools' Day and since then has evolved into an all day party where locals dress in clothing poking fun at 'gapers' or tourists. Ahh, so that's what it was.
Woke this morning to couple of inches of new snow and a layer of fog. Temp was 18F but with wind chill factor feels like 6F (~ minus 14 C). So much for ...
... in the free park and walk with our gear a short distance.
Keystone comprises 3 main peaks Dercum Mountain, North Peak and The Outback with runs coming down fom each. As the weather forcast was for a cold airmass bringing snow to arrive by early afternoon we decided to ski across to the farthest peak (the Outback) and work our way back from there. This proved to be a good decision.
The place was almost deserted with no queues anywhere and lovely long wide well groomed ...
... iPad for music. In fact vey little in the way of spec internally in the Jeep, no external temp guage, no cruise control, no iPod plug. Wouldn't buy one myself - but we are in America so it fits right in.
Headed for the Lionsgate parking and after some faffing around found ourselves heading up the slopes in the Gondola. Lots of people dressed up in fancy dress as it was apparently "Gaybor Day". The 2 guys in our lift were drinking "breakfast beer" at 10:30am! ...
... still try. After a little panic when Ian couldn't find where he had packed the chesty we got everything together and by the time we had finished breakfast and got down to the ski locker the cloud had definitely lifted, which looked promising.
We thought we would try it out on the first lift going up to Peak 9 just to make sure it worked in the cold weather. Seemed to work fine, just not sure if we had the angle set right ...
... night. Bubba Gump looked good and Kenosha Steakhouse.
Tried again to get Ian's Samsung S4 connected to the hotel wifi to no avail. Seached the net and found that the problem is common but none of the suggested fixes seemed to work. But then got a big surprise when Silvie rang him (so he does have global roaming after all!) She only wanted to know his secret steak marinade recipe of course.
Have decided tomorrow will be a GoPro day then perhaps off to Vail on Tuesday.
