~~ 'Pepero Day' is all about the chocolate rush ~~

Today is Peparo Day here in South Korea...its the Korean equivalent of Valentine's Day (and just as commercial) BUT on 11-11 each year Korean's give chocolate covered biscuits sticks (to resemble 11-11) to loved ones and family....thankfully the sentiment also stretches to family and teachers - therefore after a hard day at work i have returned to the comfort of my own home with 6 boxes of chocolate cookies and ...

Chuseok holiday and teaching

... got on the elevator and went up to the sixth floor, where school is, to find that the doors on the floor were still locked. Even the guy who had the keys to the outside door, did not have the keys to the inside doors. He started trying to us a credit card to open the lock, but it didn't work and he didn't want to risk breaking it. Finally, Sonia, the manager showed up and unlocked everything. Her and one other staff member are the only ones with keys to the ...

... going to the church. I got the impression she wanted me to go to the church with her right then. I looked at the time and I had planned to go to school to prep for class at 2 pm which I teach at 4 pm. I was planning to get back at 1pm to shower and get ready and it was 12:40 so I didn't think I would have enough time since it was a 15 minute walk back. Then she pulled out her cell phone and called up the pastor at the church. He lived in TX for seven years and ...

Settling in

... ll probably never go there because I'm too busy before work, but someday maybe I'll stop by. I'm just excited to know it's there for now. I have a cell phone for local calls and two phone numbers in it, lol. I have a local bank account and can access my American account (there was a hold because I didn't tell them I was leaving the country). Things are working out pretty good. I'm really excited that Leana will be coming to Daegu this weekend!!

Dongchon Middle School

Thursday found us going to Beth's school, Dongchon Middle School, where she teaches English. After a tour of her classroom and some of the school we "went to the principal's office". There we met the Vice Principal, Mr. Kim, and the Principal, Mr. Lee as well as the English teacher Beth co-teaches with, Mrs. Jang. She came along to translate as well as social time. After some light conversation and some good coffee, we left ...

... school, Dongchon Middle School, that Beth teaches at. We rode to a very nice Korean restaurant and enjoyed galbi gim, which is similar to the other meat, but this is steamed, and cooked with pumpkin, sweet potatoes, carrots and mushrooms. It was very delicious and quite enjoyable to visit with Beth's co-worker, son and boyfriend........very nice people and a enjoyable evening topped off by dessert at Baskin Robbins!

28 Years Later

... from the nearby farming village. Stars shone brightly. Both places seemed so far away. But the trail-head was here beneath me and I needed to make a decision. Upon entering the forest the trees swished, rustling their leaves in the cold wind. I suddenly remembered the burial plots, large mounds of earth along the sides of the path. My heart started hammering as the forest swallowed me. Yet I continued, reassured as my eyes adjusted to the darkness. Now ...

My first weekend.

... English language books, so I decided to check it out first. It was big and seemed like a Korean version of Chapters. There was even a Starbucks (I knew I would sniff one out sooner or later). I stopped there and grabbed a coffee, which cost me W4500. What a rip! I don't think I will be drinking Starbucks with the same regularity I did back home... Also, there is only milk, no cream (talk about a deal breaker...). After kyobi I ...

Korea makes me laugh!!

... I need to entertain myself with indecent answers to lovely accusations. Haha - the other day when we were having one of our 'chats' we were sitting in silence (as we often do) then he turned to me and said "UH eat and sleep UH?" (when he puts UH at the end it means I've to translate it into a meaningful sentence). I said "Yes, yes, eat and sleep is fine. You can say They came to eat and sleep at my house". But he wasn't happy with this. So he spent about a year looking it up ...
