Hoi An is a charming little spot along the central coast of Vietnam, just south of the DeMilitiarized Zone and old separation between North and South Vietnam. We had 3 very well-spent days there, definitely a great stop en route to Saigon. Mon 1/Sept: I woke up Monday morning on an overnight sleeper bus from Hanoi to Hue. They have an open bus ticket that you can purchase from Hanoi to Saigon or vice versa. It was 55 per person, and included 7 different stops, all on a sleeper bus, mostly ove...
Hoi An, Vietnam 101travel08We arrived from Hue on 3rd March, and checked into a really nice hotel (Hoa My) for $3.5 each. as is the way in Hoi An, we got hassled constantly to buy suits - this is one of the cheapest places to get a tailor-made suit, but i didn't want to spend my money now. After wandering around for a bit we watched Liverpool vs Manchester United in Treats Bar, then found a 3000vtd beer place, where we had a few cheap drinks. We ended that night in a bar that was recommended to us, however it turned ou...
Hoi An, Vietnam c-hampden After our visit to the Mekong Delta our next stop was the small UNESCO heritage town of Hoi An.
The trip to Hoi An involved a little champagne backpacking, instead of a £5, 12 hour overnight bus, we splashed the cash and spent £20 on the one hour flight to Hoi An. What a difference to Saigon, the road between the airport and Hoi An was wide and empty and instead of being met with a big bustling city we found an ancient town full of old Chinese style houses, assembly halls and temples. ...
Our next stop was Ha Long Bay, one of my most anticipated destinations on this trip so far. We booked a tour through a local agency, $30 for a two day tour through the bay, including a night spent on the boat. We caught an early minivan. Along the way, I couldn't help but noticing a number of signs selling 'Thit Cho'. Upon inquiry, Will informed me that this was Vietnamese for cooked dog. How delightful. Will is Chinese-Vietnamese on his first tour of the country on a unique journey of discov...

D Day +25
In Hoi An for two nights and the first day was *****. First bad day I have had on my Adventures. It's rainy, it's cold and I have the worst map in history and proceed to get lost.

Can't wait to get out of Hoi An. Place is **** but think I try and have a decent night. And what a night I had. There are two or three places that are decent (The King Kong Bar does free rum....All night) Go out with a ...
... Karaoke (me singing Britany Spears and Tom belting out Brian Adams Summer of 69 amongst others!) , obscure Halloween games and a fair bit of drinking......although we noticed that only the Westerners were the ones doing the drinking, the Vietnamese didnt seem to need anything to have a good time!!
All in all, good times had in Hoi An and Hue!
Next stop......the capital of Vietnam - Hanoi!
Lots of Love

... alongside the pretty water to the Japanese Bridge. The old town here is famous around Vietnam (it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site) and is certainly very picturesque with old colonial buildings fronting narrow streets. Another reason why Hoi An is famous is for all the clothes tailors there is here - it is said there are over 400 shops! We visited one that our hotel recommended and checked out some catalogues for some ideas. Cesca was unsure of what she wanted so I stepped up ...

We were getting worried about the weather in Hoi An. The previous day, Mark had rung Dung, who said there were no problems with flooding, but that there had been really strong winds. Then, our friend Robyn had texted to say that it was as bad as two years ago, which was one of the worst floods ever. Mark rang ...

... She was being a very determined tourist. We went to Solo restaurant for lunch, and Gordon and I told the boss, Hanh, before Mary arrived, that it was her birthday and Hanh was very excited. Not long after we arrived, Hanh’s husband left on his motorbike, prompting Gordon to remark that he had done the same thing when we had gone there a few days previously. Anyway, a few minutes after Mary arrived, Hanh appeared with a lovely bunch of flowers, which was lovely.
