The ferry from Langkawi was fast and efficient an we saw some great seascapes sailing thrugh the Andaman Sea. A three night stay in Georgetown, the largest city on the island of Penang and the second largest city in Malaysia, but once again, we find much of the town closed for our time here (we are beginning to take this personally!). After another ferry journey we arrived at Penang. We were only staying one night and we knew exactly what we wanted from our stay here. Curry and cinema. So we watched a couple of movies and then hit Little India. We stayed the night at a guesthouse called Hutton Lodge, which was a lovely place to stay, really cheap and clean, although the walls were very thin. The next day we got up, went to Little India again for lunch and then headed to get the night bus east.

Penang is known as the Pearl of the Orient and is one of Malaysia's most visited sites. It's well known for it's lively chinese culture (the majority of the island is chinese rather than malay-islam), its colonial architecture, and it's diverse food - especially its street food. Georgetown was the initial settlement on this island (it was basically a swampy forest when the Brits arrived) on this island which is the oldest of the British Straits settlements (predating Singapore and Melaka). After the 15 minute boat journey, arrived on Penang Island just after 6am. Loads of buses waiting at the other side, and all of them go to the centre of Georgetown, the main town on the island, so I jump on one for the (all of 5 minute!) journey. Getting my bearings in the centre, I work my way out to find the hostel, and man do they have giant pavements here! George Town on the island of Penang has recently made it as a UNESCO world heritage site, although one is warned that they still have to realise its major potential, nevertheless we had high expectations! We caught a mid morning bus from the fantastic moorish Kuala Lumpur old station up towards Georgetown on Pulau Penang. It was quite a luxurious experience, rather like flying business class and a bargain at only 55 Ringgit (under ten pounds). Five and a half hours later, we were in Georgetown. Penang is an island off Malaysia and there are two ways to get there; by car, over the bridge that connects to the mainland; and by incredibly cheap ferry. The train from Kuala Lumpur stops at the ferry port, so that was our natural crossing point. The train had been cramped due to our late booking only allowing us a pair of reclining seats.
