... of water evaporated, was encapsulated by clay then lava, and later raised by tectonics into the mountain. The mine is still active, producing tons on salt every year by bore hole drilling technology and dissolution/evaporation methods. There were light shows, movies, pumping stations, slides to go down (!!), Europe's oldest staircase with a 3-D projection of what life was like when it was used, and then a train ride that took us out of the mine at the end. In fact our second choice a few miles further was also documented as closing on 4th October - that's today! We elected to pack up and go take a "look see". Being a Sunday there wasn't a single shop open en-route so we're onto backup ...

Time for some exercise, says Sandra. OK, options are bike or Shanks' pony. We opt for the latter as bikes may prove an encumbrance. Chores done, we set off up the lakeside for 4-5 kilometres in the sunshine. Stocks are running low, so water is rationed. St Gilgen has ice cream shops for Keith, and tourist tat for everyone else, but it also has a wedding in progress so lots of folk are milling around in their Saturday best, some of which ...
