... us a birthday breakfast of bacon and eggs to start our day. Birthday cake for lunch and finally the sun decided to poke its head out from the clouds and we scarpered out to catch some fresh air and do some exploring.
We wandered along the deserted beach for just under a couple of hours. Great to feel the fresh air in our faces and finally see the glimpse of blue sky pocking through. Had fun mucking around and also playing with the camera.
... manage to raise $5.5 million to repair the wharf. An incredible amount of money for something that serves no real practical purpose.
Tolaga Bay is perhaps the most popular of places to stay along the East Cape, not that many people travel this route, so it's not busy, but we seek further seclusion so travel a short distance up the road to the next bay, Kaiaua. It is easy to miss, no signs marking the road, we go past it ...
... famous (in NZ) L&P soft drink (think liquid lemon sherbert). Had the compulsory photo in front of the big bottle and drove on. Drove up the coast and then crossed the peninsula via some huge Kauri trees and on to Tairua.
Next day we went up the coast and braved snorkelling in the water for a whole 10 minutes, the locals in their wetsuits were impressed! Then on to Hot Water Beach where we dug our very own hot water pool, along with about 100 other people. Very ...
... as we arrived at the top. There were 4 up on top already plus the 5 of us that came up. It was about 635 when we got to the top. I thought it was far too early to be up and working that hard especially when it was raining! Still don't kno how people can wake up that early and go running. Why be up when you can still be sleeping? Right? The light was slowly starting to get bright but you couldn't see the sun. Seemed like forever before it actually rose. About 704am is when ...
... and we won't soon forget how fun it was.
We then headed back to the house to be greeted by all their neighbors some of whom we had met and others we were meeting for the first time. This proved to be an entertaining lot of people of whom we grew so fond of and wished we had known the entire time we were there. We met Rachel and Jim who were neighbors towards the bottom of the hills--Rachel cooks for visitors of Huarata ...
