A two hour train trip from Budapest through fields and fields of blooming bright yellow sunflowers, brought us to the beautiful little town of Eger. Our pension hotel was right in the centre of town and our room even had a small balcony with views of one of the towns many church spires.

Our main reason for visiting Eger was for its wine, but we thought we better take in some of the other sights as well, so spent the afternoon we arrived enjoying the small town atmosphere and ...

Headed South into Hungary, on the back roads, the rain has stopped, the roads are good and with very little traffic I've had a fun day. Bimbled along at around 60 mph just taking in the sites. Temperature in the high 20's so all good. Managed to get 390 miles out of a tank so I must be taking is slow!!

... I swiped a parking bus, losing the side-view mirror in the process. Leaving me with 4 weeks of dodging the local authorities as we endeavour to complete our holiday without replacing it. Once arriving in Eger, our hotel proved a challenge to locate, tucked away in the cobblestone streets. ... some interesting 3-D painted altars replacing ones that were burned in a fire. Next to it was the Town Hall and an old fashioned pharmacy. We had to go back to the car to plug the meter, then walked back through the other side of town towards the large Basilica. On several houses there were markers showing the height of the water during the 1878 flood- it would have been up to my nose! ... when the spring was found. They were digging for oil in 1961 when they found a mineral water well that supplies 69 degree water for a massive spa complex and a second well was dug in 1986. It was really cool to see the salt formation, like a cascading wall of salt terraces- the water was so warm that it was steaming as the surrounding air was starting to cool down. We walked back to the hotel to rest up for tomorrow's trip into Eger just a few miles ...
