... kind of hubris would lead a man to want to build a fake bit of Spain atop a Californian hill?

Up the road from San Simeon is Cambria a town apparently designed to look like an English village. It doesn't but its hotch pot architecture and charm wins us over. Up on Nit Witt Ridge is the anti-Hearst Castle, a home built by the town's refuse collector over a 50 year period using found or recycled material. Now that is a proper castle.

Woke up and Todd had made breakfast and Christina was visiting. It's nice to have breakfast made for you. Sat around the table and chatted then Christina had to go to work. At least someone works around here. We visited for a bit then Todd left to pick up Tannis and bring her to SD. I relaxed, read my book while he worked on her computer at her house. For some reason she couldn't get onto ...

Phrase du jour: "you know ...

... child in mid-October, but her email a few days prior to our departure sounded like she might be early, so hopefully our timing will be right! After breakfast we make our way down the gangplank and head up Broadway. It is very pleasant walking as the fog has lifted, the sun is shining and with a bit of a breeze from the ocean, the temperature is perfect. We have arranged to meet Barbara at the Norton Shopping Center from there ...

    Something Different

    from anonymous

If you're looking for something a little exotic, Humphrey's is the place. The tropical landscaping is terrific and the hotel is set on an island with boat related businesses all around. My room was nice, fairly average, but I didn't want to spend time there with so much to do outside. Things get a little busy on concert nights but my room was away from where the concert was being held so I didn't experience any noise. Seems like going to dinner, a concert and back to your room here would be a great weekend getaway...

    Best vacation spot!

    from Jillianns

We went to Humphrey's 6/12-6/17/2003, and had a wonderful time! We were given a Standard king size room with a patio. The room was always immaculate, with fresh soaps and towels everyday. The grounds were beautiful, with a large well maintained swimming pool and hot tub, ponds, putting green. Our son enjoyed the parrots on the grounds. The location is wonderful, everything you would want to see in San Diego is less than 15 minutes away. There are great restaurants right on Shelter Island too. The staff was very accomodating, calling to see if we liked our room, and making sure that the crib was delivered, and helpling us with directions. They also sell tickets to the zoo and Sea World in the lobby. We can't wait to go back!

    Very Nice!

    from anonymous

Just stayed here on May 25th, 2003 and really liked it. We had an upper floor king room facing the garden. I'm glad i picked this room, because it was away from the pool area (which can get noisy) and away from the concert stage (although there were no concerts when we stayed). Facing the marina would also be nice, but in most cases that also means facing the parking lot!Loved the lush tropical plants in the garden...very well done. Hot tub and pool area was very nice (the pool is heated). The room was clean, airy and big (vaulted ceilings on second floor). The bathroom was clean, and tastefully done. Didn't feel like a typical "hotel room". Good energy. The only downside was that we stayed just one night. We'll definitely come back as stay longer!

Nice, but with a couple cautions

    from Bobette23

We spent two nights at Humphrey's. I loved the tropical feel and landscaping, and the room was large and comfy.I would advise to check about concerts though - some rooms directly overlook a concert stage, and they have 30 or so concerts during the summer, so if you don't want to be part of the show, make sure your room is far away. The pool is huge and lovely, with a poolside bar. The pool is open from 8 am to 11 pm, so if you are a light sleeper who is early to bed, you might consider a room on the outside of the hotel. It is near a marina and a bay, but no sandy beaches that I could find. There are several good restaurants about 4 or 5 blocks away. The service was very pleasant but not terribly efficient - I changed my reservation, but apparently they didn't, and told me they were sold out when we got there. They "found" a room for me and wanted to charge me $20 more than the price I booked at, but managed to waive that at the last minute. The other service problem was that we didn't get maid service until 4 pm when we had left our room at 9 am with the maid service sign on the door. We had to call to get someone to come. The sign had blown off the door, but still, don't they check?Anyway, I found the place so charming I would go back despite those slip-ups. It is really pretty and has a great bay or marina or pool view...

    Honeymoon at Humphrey's

    from anonymous

We stayed at Humphrey's for 5 nights on our honeymoon April 28-May3. Very very nice place. We had the ex. suite(very large) that over looked the marina. You are right there at everything. We took pleasure in there free bikes and took a ride around the bay. The lounge is great, the pool and jacuzzi were great(the water was in the pool was warm even though the temp didnt get out of the sixties we were able to enjoy. Cant say enough about the place and the service.

    My group enjoyed their stay!

    from anonymous

My group of 24 spent two nights here and everyone enjoyed their stay. I had searched extensively for the right price/ quality and could not find anything I was satisfied with until I came across Humphreys Half Moon Inn. The quality and service advertised and reviewed exceeded any other options in my groups price range, and the quality and service experienced exceeded everyones expectations. Everyone enjoyed their room accommodations, and we had rooms located throughout their facilities (poolside& garden view rooms w/ two queen beds and an executive suite with a fantastic view of the marina). All of the rooms were clean and spacious, the pool and spa areas were well maintained as were the rest of the grounds. The staff always proved to be very helpful and considerate. I have already recommended Humphreys to a number of friends for their next visit to San Diego for work or for play, and I am definitely checking my schedule for an opportunity to take my family back for some play time at Humphreys and maybe a trip to Balboa park or the zoo.

My husband din't want to leave!

    from anonymous

We loved our stay at Humphrey's. The room was tastefully decorated and and was very quiet. While our room was only a few feet from the pool and spa, we heard very little noice from those enjoying the large pool, pingpong table and croquet field. We did not have a view of the yachts or sea but felt the price was still very good considering we loved the location of the hotel and the tropical feel of the pool and courtyard. The rooms have an iron and ironing board, coffee pots, a fridge, a table and two chairs and a large bathroom. We don't have children but saw many young families enjoying themselves. We checked out other hotels and decided that Humphrey's was the only place we would stay when we return to San Diego. The hotel is only minutes from the Airport and downtown San Diego. It is also close to Sea World and other attractions. Rent a car and pick up a map and you'll have no problem getting anywhere you want. If you are looking for a nice dinner, check out The French Gourmet on Turquoise street. The food and service was great!

    Great Hotel

    from Mump52

We had recently stayed at this hotel and it was really great. We stayed at a pool view on the second floor. The room and bathroom were both very clean and spacious. The pool area is very lush with foliage so it was a nice view. We initially booked a bayside view but it overlooks a parking lot and then the view of San Diego. It was no problem to change our room which had a better view. The staff were very friendly and helpful. In addition to the coffee maker in the room, there was free coffee in the lobby in the morning. They also had fruit in a basket in the afternoon. There is a path to walk around Shelter Island which was nice. It has a very small exercise room but we were able to do a workout. We ate breakfast once in the restaurant which was average. We went to the happy hour which had some appetizers to purchase which was really good. They were doing construction on their stage which was a little noisy but didn't seem to be annoying. They expect to finish this work soon. Overall this place was really nice and I would stay here again

    Great accomodations/entertainment

    from anonymous

Spent 5 days at hotel/resort. Large, clean well equipped rooms,

excellent pool/hot tub. Good food in lounge/resturant

with an excellent view of the marina and countryside.

    Outstanding entertainment venue there also.

Many big name stars featured there. Harry Connick Jr. played one night in the

lounge. Humphrey's also has big name stars at their outdoor concert stage in

    the summer.

Highly Recommend it. Will Return again.
