This morning we set off about 10.30 with Petra and Johan to see Jessica, quite a drive over the mountain range and out the other side, I have yet to write down the area we went to, then it was time to turn up a gravel road for several kilometres. Jessica's surroundings are not flash or commercialised, her owner used to be a park ranger until Jessica came into his life, she turned up in the 2000 floods and has been a happy camper there ever since. She is free to ...

... is reportedly the third largest canyon in the world. To day was also a public holiday so thee were a few groups of people around celebrating. The Bourke's Luck potholes were fabulous. Even though it was raining it was good to get out of the van to stretch the legs. If it had been fine it would have been great to explore a little further but the rocks were pretty slippery and we were all getting wet. The stop at the three rondevals was dry ...

Along the way we saw 3 elephants, a group of kudu, a lizard buzzard with an tree iguana in its claws, and a jackal buzzard.
The rooms and dining area of the lodge were magnificent and ...

... be seen of the surrounding low lands. We then came down from the mountains through a large number of pine plantations to Hazyview which was a surprisingly large town. The camp here was not fantastic as they had been doing a number of upgrades so the truck had to park in the carpark outside the newly constructed electric fence. This meant we actually had the evening meal in the car park ...

... that looks out over the golf course and forest area. There is a fence around the property with a 24 hour guard gate. We sat out by the pool for awhile after unpacking. The pool was too cool to swim. Tonight we had dinner at the lodge. Tried a new fish, Kingklip. It was excellent. A good beginning to our first day in South Africa.
