More than a month into the five I will be spending here in Maldives and I've got to see a bit of life under the surface - figuratively and quite literally as I am learning to SCUBA dive, but more of that in a future post.

There is plenty of political stuff going on, but I won't comment on that. Google it if you are curious.

A welcome discovery has been the local lads who are doing their bit to keep traditional Maldivian music alive. ...

... back and changed after Jess tried out her mermaid tail. The pool has fiber optic lights in it that make it look like a starry night which is great because we see thousands of stars. I really haven't seen this many stars in the sky, ever. The dinner options are few so we had steak and chicken, about $75, which is better than the $75 per person buffet I guess. It was good food though.

Tomorrow is more beach and pool.

... of snorkelling with one of the Islands 3 resident turtles on two separate occasion in 2 different locations (until I got a little seasick!). Our room attendant Mouhamed Ali, our waiter Muhamed and our boat captain Mohammed (can you see a theme here) are all from local islands, but the majority of staff are from all over the world, China, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, India even Bali. They get 2 year work permits and live on island (in a middle bit we don't see). We did find ...

... were dark shadows moving just next to the dhoni. Mantas?! No - huge blue marlins! There were 3 of them, hunting. One even jumped out of the water, right next to us. They were massive. Awesome!

    More food. Lunch.

And then the final thila for the day - Haafsa. Loved this one too. Grey reefs everywhere!! We just sat for ages on the edge of the wall whilst 4 massive and 2 smaller grey reefs circled around in front ...

... being naked on this very devoutly Muslim island. Oops.

My plan for the evening is looking into options for our second hotel here. This one is fine, but we are tempted by one of the all-inclusive resorts- here, we have to pay so much for each meal, each trip to the beach, each snorkel mask rental, that it seems like it might be just as cheap to stay somewhere nicer that has all that included... we shall see. Good night all!!!
