      Traveling Through Slovakia

... in Bratislava. Despite being half Czech and looking like I live here, I don't speak a word of the language (while the Czech Republic and Slovakia are different independent nations, they share common backgrounds and languages; think of it like Austria and Germany). And, unlike Slovenia, where nearly everyone speaks English, barely anyone in Slovakia does. Luckily, I've been in this situation a few times before, so I was able to reach into my bag of tricks. ...

As this is an area that is not frequented by tourists, I want to just mention how worthwhile I found our time in Eastern Slovakia. There is incredible hiking and sightseeing and great food. The first day I was having some stomach problems from eating too may hot peppers at a buffet and it was rainy and misty to boot. We started a hike and kinda gave up after an hour or two. We couldn't even see the large lake we were climbing next to. But after I tried a local herbal/honey liquer with a lemon slice at a restaurant, I felt much better.

Back at the Penzion, we had noticed some people stopping in for lunch as we left. ...

... Big Deal! We sat in the hot pool and enjoyed the rain. Each night, there was a laser show in one of the large indoor pools. It was actually pretty cool. I've never seen anything like it and they can create holograms of people dancing in mid-air above the pools after they spray a fog over the pool.

In the background are the Tatras Mountains, a range of the Carpathians. It's a big tourist draw for Slovakians, ...
