... work my way across the mountain to the west side and take the gondola down. I had thought the eastern part of the mountain was pretty but it was completely blown away by the west side. The scenery was indescribable. And the stairs cut into the rocks were often breathtaking. I took almost a whole memory card worth of photos (which in case you're wondering is approximately a ****-ton). I made it to the cable car with 2 minutes to spare before it closed for the night. What a great night in our hotel in this beautiful country setting! It is so dark out here, surrounded by fields of rapeseed, tea, rice and other crops, that all we heard this morning as we awoke was the many different types of birds singing their songs around us. Again we wanted to ‘beat the crowds’ and left our hotel at 8.15am after a buffet breakfast. We left our big luggage with the hotel and only took up bare essentials in a daypack. Though we thought we’d run early, everyone else thought the same thing and there were busloads of people already at The South Gate cable ...

... The scenery continued to amaze over the next couple of days. Where it was winter on our first day, spring and summer came around overnight. It was our second day that we got up at 5:30am for a short ten minute climb to see the sunrise. It didn't come up until 6:20am, but it was worth getting an earlier start, as the viewing area filled up pretty quickly after we got there! When the sun did rise over the surrounding mountains and Huangshan, it was truly magical. ...
