Magic Stone

For ages, people can not understand how this huge stone ends up at the tip of the peak and believe the stone has some kind of magic power - fertility. People will bride the stone by stocking coins in a crack and pat the stone. Poor park ranger has to keep cleaning the coins but not taking the coins. It is a brutal task when it is wet, cold and dark.

... people call them pony tail pine because their leaves/branches only grow one direction. For those pine trees grow at the higher altitude areas, people call them Yellow Mountain Pine.

No matter how the tree grows or leaves are heading, their roots are so strong and firm that make those trees grow more generations to come.

Stinky Fish

One of regional delicacy in Huizhuo area is stinky fish. People caught the local river fish and aged the fish for a week with multiple spice and pickles. People cook the fish with black beans. The meat of the fish tastes so creamy and fresh that you won't believe that the fish was aged for a ...

My Favorite Mountain in the World

... us. Its peaks are majestic and the rolling clouds make the place dreamlike. My only big fear was losing one of the kids off one of the trails. The hiking trails are like death traps. If you fall off, it's a sheer drop and there would be no saving you. People have died here, trying to take pictures according to the tour guides. So I was apprehensive about having us go, but we made sure the kids understood how dangerous it was and we mostly stayed off the ...

Tranquil & Unearthly Huangshan

... was a minibus parked out side waiting for drowned stray cats.

Just over an hour later (another 13 Yuan) we were pulling into the small Local Bus station in the Train Station car park. I then headed across to the hotel eatery and had some of the best fried rice I’ve ever eaten and then with jelly legs I headed up stairs to do my hand washing (like a good boy) before having a rest.

It is now eleven ...

... train felt like a butcher’s fridge and today it felt like a baker’s oven.

I checked out quite a few hotels in the train station area and decided against the one that smelt so much like Chili (due to the eatery below the window) that it made my eyes water as soon as I opened the door and decided on a room in the little family hotel on the ...

... and hopped (and paid for) another bus to go to Huangshan city. The bus didn't want to move though, and if some of the Chinese men hadn't been so angry, I would have been (as it was I was worn out and quite happy to have them yell at the woman themselves). This is when I first noticed the trend in China for the old women to be... utter hags. The girls are the most beautiful, innocent and generally kind, the eyes are the most ...

Huangshan-High Heels, Cement Stairs, and a Sunrise

... scarce. The Chinese have a different concept of a retreat to nature than we do. We found the brief moments of solitude to be mere eyeblinks compared to the normalcy of being surrounded by droves of Chinese tour groups divided into teams of matched-hats and characterized by a need to wear clothing that looked entirely unsuitable for any sort of moutaineous terrain (including high heels, dress pants galore, and fashion boots ...
