Dag 24: Van Hutong naar Bataviastad-outletstore

half 12 's avonds.

... out how to cross the road, someone had to point out that there was an underpass to us. And some random chinese people came up to us, said hello in their chinese accent, and ran away laughing. Yesterday we went to see the olympic sites. It was pretty cool. It felt kinda weird to me though because during the olympics we were at our cottage with no TV so the olympics for me was limited to 10 minutes of gymnastics. So when I said "look at that ...

... looking for a decent restaurant that is air-conditioned. None. We managed to get two taxis to take us to another shopping market. After some walking, we finally sat down at a foreign franchise pizza restaurant with air-condition and felt we wouldn't survive another minute in the heat. Exhausted from the hot day ...

... Development & Guidance. It combines clapping, raised thumbs, punching a fist in the air and shouting "Go Olympics, Go China." In 2001, when China was competing with Toronto for the right to host the 2008 Games, people debated whether the Olympics might serve as a catalyst for change in China. Now they worry about how much damage the Games may cause. "The preparation for the Olympics has actually had a negative impact on some areas of human rights," said Irene Khan ...

Week One

... were pretty disgusting.  I guess they weren't fans of a crunchy outside with a gooey center :) TUESDAY - Observatory, Silk Road, Japanese food Regular morning routine.  Lunch at the First Restaurant. After lunch, we travelled by bus and subway to an old observatory.  Inside, I felt like I was really in China... you know, it looked "Chinese" with the old architecture, vibrant colors, tall trees, stone statues, etc.  There was a nice exhibit on ground level with many buildings ...

Day 3

Having slept so little in the last 24 hours we have a bit of a long lie. I wake at 9.45 and take myself down to the living area. Trying to remain tidy in our small living quarters I sort out a few of my things then have a shower. Once Rich is also up and showered we head for a day of sightseeing. First we find ourselves at The Park of the Peoples Culture. The Park of the Peoples Culture lies to the south east of the Forbidden City and runs for one half ...

Sightseeing around Beijing

... but then, as the rain and the fog were thickening, we decided to go back down. We sat again on these weird cog cars, this time, attached together in sort of trains of 12 each and steered by one of the employee. Going down didn't feel much more reassuring than going up, but we arrived safely again. We spent a bit of time watching the bears in their pits, but they definitely looked even more deranged than those locked in the famous Berne bear pit. They ...

Day Three

... but even without the girls the garden was incredible. If we had time and quiet I think Lyndsay and I would have liked to rest our feet there for a while. Alas we could not, it was too crowded to be relaxing, and we had a schedule to follow, so we left. We had to go to a pearl factory. This was to be our last factory of our trip; it wasn't so much as factory as just a big pearl shop. Upon entry each tourist was greeted by ...
