Somewhere in, China eobd22... City with Luo Wei.. Ying is from Zhengzhou which is the capital of Henan Province and only an hour away from Kaifeng. While we are on the subject of me having another few months off to travel, I've been told I finish teaching at the end of December and that the new term begins around the end of February. I can't say that will happen and I'm preparing to finish teaching around the ...
Shangzhou, China eddakath... and then continued on their way up the hill. The walk was beautiful and it takes a few hours to get from the bottom, all the way across to the third Pagoda and then back down to the bottom again. It was growing dark as I left the third pagoda but thankfully half the town was on the hill for their evening walk so I had no problem finding my way back down. I am serious and most of them would be over ...
Shangzhou, China eddakath... Greek/Turkish sounding language, with a coruscated tongue. Plenty of tshkr sounds. No pigs. Most are Muslim. Plenty sheep, goats and cattle. Great kebabs everywhere. People look like they are from one of the 'Stans. And they probably are. All of China runs on official Beijing time. Except Xinjiang, which runs 'unofficially' two hours behind. Catch a bus out of Kashgar, in the extreme west. The ticket is printed with Xinjiang time, and departs as planned. Next stop Hotan ...
Lanzhou, Gansu, China the-rambler... 1000 stairs just to get to it and then some challenging walking once you are there. We took the toboggan run down which is basically the world's longest super slide. Totally fun! Tomorrow, it's back to swimming. Christine is the presumptive butterflyer on the relay. The coaches haven't announced it officially yet, even if Katie Currie and Matt Lauer have. So the plan for tomorrow is to ...
Mutianyu, China magsfans... showers were some of the worst that we saw in China (quite an honour). There was a squat toilet (that didn't seem to flush or have a bucket of water near it) right next to the shower and the only shower with hot water didn't seem to drain. By perching on the edge of a row of bricks between the toilet and the shower you could avoid the twin risks of falling into the pool of everyone else's shower water or the alternative ...
Deqin, China katewest... many, and the children at my school did their small part by bringing toys and books from home to sell in a massive yard sale. It was a touching sight - some of the toys were items which we as Canadians would have tossed into the garbage long ago. Compared to Canadians the children here have few toys. Many families have no hot water and most have no heat. Toys are not a priority. Yes, the media was here to report on and take photographs of the fund raising ...
Shaowu, China jmlamport... elevation summer grazing pastures, only to come back in time before winter. Finally to go to college out of five T-fork in the road to college on both sides of the road full Baita, T-junction there is a huge Baita. A lot of lamas and sleep el [female practice of Tibetan Buddhism, and Han said the nuns] on the train, on the train lamas are relatively young, and they talked together, listening Lama said that Buddhist College, 1 ...
sexu, Sichuan, China qian_0_wei... Tibet. Naito and I faced a small family, a grandmother, a mother and a small son of about four. The boy was shy at first, but soon had flirted his way into our extreme good favor. We passed the time mimicking his faces and noises and he ours until he over generously gave us more sunflower seeds than we could eat in one night. The atmosphere is changing as we travel. We marveled in Beijing at how we were so often left alone ...
Lanzhou, China 3broadsabroad... his sheep shopping seemed to be a fairly common sight. As the bus left at 6:30am, we slept through a lot of it. Fairly long journey - 220km taking nearly 6hrs. Wasn't helped that the Xiahe-Liuxia "highway" is a mixture of gravel road, pot-holed sealed road and mud track - the only smooth bit is the toll-booth gates at the start. Also, it wasn't a very happy little bus we were riding ...
