HE SAID: We left our great hot springs resort to travel further north up the east coast of Taiwan. I am not sure if it's just the right time of year but this part of Taiwan rivals some of the best scenery I have seen in the past 11 months of traveling. The terraced rice fields are spectactular and are surrounded by rolling mountains. The roads are lined with tons of scenic places to pull over and explore. We checked out Longshan national park and were there by ourselves (a tour bus did just l...
Hualien, Hualien, Taiwan travelbeeHE SAID: After some great hot pot at Ko Ri An I realized that Stacy and I have reached celebrity status here in Taiwan (including China as well). Since we are one of the only few white tourists on the island, we get extra long stares several times each day. In addition, every few days we get asked if locals can have their picture taken with us white folks. While in Guilin, China, Stacy, two other people, and me, wanted to get a foot massage but the place was packed full of Asians getting mass...

... power but it was OK because the air was so fresh and cool on the mountain that we really enjoyed it. We were also so high that our bags of chips expanded so much that they actually popped open because of the presure!
After we stopped at the top of the mountain for some pictures we started our decent down the mountain and we stopped at a very well known stop in Taiwan, Taroko Gorge. We only stopped at a couple places along the gorge but it was so amazing. All the ...

I left Daniel to do his work and decided to go to the Huo Ran pavillion instead. Thinking it would be an easy 800 metres, it turned out to be ascending 450m in elevation in a 1.1km trail, which is apparently very steep! Luckily, I bumped into some workers of the activity centre and they said taht I can go up but seemed a little worried I was going by myself. She lent me her walking stick and said that it will come in handy later. That lady ...
... ready to fire. This was a cycling trip like no other. A few turns remained and the path finally revealed the ocean again. It was a great site to behold after that 10 km journey, but ominous clouds in the distance took the shine off a little. We still had time to eat yet another ice cream and stroll along pebble stone beach, before the heavens opened. Hiding under cover we waited for the rain to stop. Maybe more than 10 minutes passed ...

Hualien, Taiwan taiwanec... on the phone, then scurried around packing up to go. I got to breakfast just as everyone was leaving. I wasn't that hungry any way, so I just had some cereal. We met Dr Wu downstairs at 8am, so that we could leave to catch the High Speed Rail. We piled into two taxis and rode for about 10 mins to the Taipei rail station. The Taipei railway station reminded me of a modern version of Penn station in New York City. Three different train systems stop here on three ...

Taroko, Taiwan schwateWe decided that a week in Taipei was a bit long, and took a trip down to the Taroko Gorge. It is a very impressive marble gorge in Eastern Taiwan. We were armed with a tourist brochure and sense of adventure and ready to do some walking, as what we wanted to get to was back down the road we had just come up 19kms away. From where we were staying we started walking back down the road along the gorge, through tunnels and hair pin turns, lots of fun when a tour bus goes roaring ...
Hualien, Taiwan mattandnicole... had just returned from living in the U.S. for 30 years to be with her father in his waning years. She helped me to buy a new battery for my mobile phone (it just up and died) and to get an instruction manual for the watch I bought yesterday (actually they gave me a manual yesterday but I somehow managed to lose it!). We then had dinner at a famous dumpling soup place that Ann knew about. The generous guy that I am, the US$ 1.25 dinner was on me as Ann had helped me so much. I dropped ...
