... used it, since there was no one else in there at the time.
In hostels, hotels and apartments (we've stayed in all three) the norm is a western toilet, but no shower cubicle. So when you have a shower pretty much anything in the bathroom gets wet, apart from the towels which are handily stored on shelves above the loo. In this situation a squat loo would be better, since you wouldn't then sit on a wet seat afterwards.
