... food (Stinky tofu!!) It makes for quite the shopping experience. I want to have all my Christmas shopping done by the first week in December. It is weird to be thinking about the holidays here when I am still wearing t-shirts and Capri's here. Taichung, Taiwan ashleysblog... the Chinese teacher was there because she is the one that takes care of those things. But with the puke she kind of deserved that one. They get snack and no matter what it is they have to eat it all. Well one kid didn't want to finish it so she was feeding it to him and making him eat every last bit and he started to gag and then he threw it up, and it landed on the Chinese teacher's leg. GROSS! But then after she cleaned it up, she went and put more of the snack in his ...
Taichung, Taiwan ashleysblog... and stick our feet in the water to cool off at one point! This was a refreshing break! This was our last trail before heading to where the bus was supposed to pick us up. At the bus stop we met 2 people from Sweeden who were also hiking that day. One of them was studying in Taiwan and the other was just visiting for the month. It turned out we were going to the same place so they were able to show us the 2 buses that we needed to take. Taking the ...

I had never had to wear one before but I was able to sport a hot pink swim cap all day! The water park was really nice, especially on such a hot day. We went around on the lazy river a couple times and tried out 2 of the water slides. It was a fun day but I am tired after spending the day in the sun.

Until later.....love ya and miss ya!
Taichung, Taiwan ashleysblog... out of bed as though our apartment was on fire and evacuation was imminent. I observed this obscure sight with my own two eyes, still adjusting to the light, but they were not failing me this time. What could it be?? No water, the weather seemed pleasant, no aftershocks, no smoke, what is going on?? This feeling in a foreign country can make the heart of even the most practiced Buddha race. She grabbed the phone and began to call ...
Taichung, Taiwan bentaniaWe held the Cornel School "Parent/Teacher Meet and Greet" this evening in our third floor commons area. This event is very similar to an open house. However, instead of going into the classrooms, all teachers and parents meet in our big third floor and take time to introduce themselves and discuss any questions they may have. It has always been an intimidating experience to talk to parents as a professional ...
Taichung, Taiwan scotsblog... is about an owl (named Ozzie) that is told by his mother that it is time for him to grow up and fly. She provides him with an ultimatum: either learn to fly and meet her on the ground at the end of the day, or risk getting kicked out of the nest. Ozzie uses his cunning wit to convince various farm animals to help him get to the ground while avoiding learning how to fly. It is a coming-of-age tale whose symbolism really ...

I asked some of the veteran teachers if timid-teenagers were a relatively common thing in Taiwan. To my surprise, yes, it is very common. It is a strong code in Taiwanese society to "save face," meaning that they do not want to risk doing anything that could result in some sort of public embarrassment ...
Taichung, Taiwan scotsblog... be sad when they have to go and frustrating to have to have a fourth "first day of school," but I do feel that this whole situation and the challenges that have come with it is making me a much better elementary school teacher. I have the opportunity that no one else has to allow myself to experiment and see what works or does not work, so that when I do get a permanent classroom, that I can implement the right strategies to make the rest of the year a success.

I have seen about 10-15 people with just legendary moles growing on the sides of their faces. It is a rather unique sight. The tour began with the farmer showing us his "famous" pet monkey. He keeps the monkey locked in a rusty cage right near the parking lot. He started off the introduction of the odd pet by having a male student walk up to the ...
