After four perfect days in Boston, something had to take the shine off of this amazing trip. The gods of travel seemed to want to test us in Maine!
We arrived at the station in Portland at about 1:30pm and made a quick pit stop before grabbing a cab out to our hotel. As we were heading to our room we discovered that my hat was missing. Whether we left it behind in the station or aboard the train, we can't recall but it wasn't with us here. Stephne spent some time on the phone trying to...
Today was a good day. No lost stuff, no wayward sea gull defecation...all is well! We got a car this morning at the Enterprise agency down the street so we're hooked up with a sweet ride! Had a little breakfast and then headed up to Freeport for the obligatory pilgrimage to LL Bean. Freeport is a nice little village but it is entirely transformed from whatever it was into a brand retail Mecca. That's all there is...Gap, Banana Republic, J Crew, Jones New York, you name it, they've got a store...
Portland, Maine, United States kevinandstephne If there is one thing (other than lobster) that defines Maine in my mind, it would have to be lighthouses, or simply lights as they are called here. I started to get a bit of a cold yesterday and I'm a little less than 100% today so we took it a little slower and focused the day on the nearby Portland Lights.
We started with a late breakfast at Becky's Diner on Hobson's Wharf. Becky's is one of those classic diners that belong in a place like this. Very local, very working class and re...

Along the way:

Heading to Portland, Maine (to visit Tom, Denise & Foster) we drove from Milton, through the Lewiston border crossing (N of Niagara Falls), through New York, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and finally into Maine, an 11 hour drive. Surprisingly, there are no orchards or farms east of the Niagara River – it's all bush.
<br ...
Portland, Maine, United States jimcabay... Hwy I-90 is a beautiful 4-lane interstate but crowded with turnpike/thruway toll booths; we must have paid a fee at a dozen of them. Total cost = $40.

· We crossed the Adirondack, Appalachian, White and Catskill mountains (all about as big as our foothills) and the Hudson valley at Albany.

· Throughout this route, we noticed that the ...
Portland, Maine, United States jimcabay... our travels with you through this blog and hope it goes successfully. One of our audiences will be Sophie and Isabelle's classes...."hello fellow classmates/teachers". We hope to bring to this blog our personal experiences and reactions as well as some history and educational value. The girls would also like to challenge the classes with periodic questions about our destination to see if the classes can come up with the answers.
Portland, Maine, United States solingchina... in the late 1700'S to the 1930"s. The Shakers had rather odd beliefs including celibacy. The men and women worked alongside each other but were separated in the dining and bedroom areas. Needless to say the Shakers have literally all died out except for 3 very elderly members still living in the community. We visited a larger Shaker Community in Hancock, Massachucetts in 2003. The Shakers are a very interesting group! We drove back ...

Portland, Maine, United States iba-jeeWhen we checked in yesterday the ladies in reception had insisted that we should try the Merry Moose, the little log cabin in the grounds of the site that served pancakes and waffles for breakfast. So we wandered down there and put in our order for blueberry pancakes. A word of warning if you visit this KOA! The pancakes are huge! About 8 inches in diameter and about half an inch thick! And so a portion of two ...
