... sense of belonging is in relationship to others of a similar background."

I am a TCK. My mother was living and working in Zambia when she met my father, and I was raised there until the age of seven when we moved permanently to Canada. The realization came with a chuckle, and my hosts nodding their heads as I described my own experience. “And your choice to live outside your native country is classic TCK behaviour,” said John approvingly. I didn’t know that I ...

masinagudi, Tamil Nādu, India hydadventure... the best bit) was it worth taking the train? I don't know, it was a lovely thing to do, although at 5.5 hrs it was a very long haul. We had lunch in Ooty and then hopped on a bus which took two hours to get down the mountain. We romanticise about steam trains ( know I do) but there's nothing romantic about working on one of those engines. It is dirty, hot, backbreaking work and it's definitely a young man's game. My dad was a ...
Ootacamund, Tamil Nadu, India 50odd... biryani might cost 30-40rps, whereas a chicken biryani would easily be double that. In Goa we had some really nice Tibetan food (momos) and occasionally you'll find Tibetan restaurants elsewhere in non tourist areas. Chinese food is very popular it seems but they generally are not run by Chinese people and there isn't such a huge selection as you might get in a 'proper' Chinese run restaurant. In Kerala we are pleased to announce there are proper ...
Ootacamund, Tamil Nadu, India 50odd... around 3:45PM. We were welcomed by Mr. Virendra Singh, the camp leader at our base camp. We got introduced to the camp volunteers as well as our fellow trekkers. Mr. Sumesh and Ms. Tina were helping Mr. Virendra Singh. After a tea and snack, we went for a small walk to a nearby Dam, Parsons Valley Dam. The walk for around 15 minutes. The dam is around 75ft high. We walked down the dam and walked across. Came back to the camp after spending some time around dam. Sorry, no ...
Ootacamund, Tamil Nadu, India pkrmI am in the hill station of Ooty which sits at about 7,000 feet above sea level. Ooty along with other hill stations across India were created by the British to serve as the summer headquarters for the regional government on account of the summer heat being unbearable at lower elevations. I caught an early morning 20 person bus out of Mysore where I was the only Westerner on the bus. As usual people were very friendly and when I ...
Ooty, India bfaulman... night bus at 11pm to Ooty. It is the first time for me to leave the state Karnada of which Bangalore is the capital. ooty is situated in a mountainous area of Tamil Nadu at an altitude of about 2200 meters. Early in the morning the bumpy bus ride reaches for it's end. Serpentine by serpentine I can feel that we are climbing up some steep hills through dense forests. Still the fog is laying silent in the valleys which appear moment ...
