Since my return to the DR, I have been working very closely with the Rotary Club of Consuelo, as my club in Dartmouth, NS is planning a joint-development project in one of the bateyes near Consuelo. I have gotten to know the club members very well over the past year, and some of them have become my closest friends here. Even though there is a Rotary club in San Pedro, which is much closer to Juan Dolio, my heart and my club's work is with the Rotary ...
Vasca, San Pedro de Macorís, Dominican Republic la_profeHello again!

So it seems that every a month goes by before I get a chance to add an update! There is quite a bit to recount this time, so I will try to do a few entries to catch up...

During the rest of Ian's visit in September, we managed to pack quite a lot in. We had a belated birthday celebration for him at my friend Matilda's house...she cooked the most amazing curry dishes, and it was a special treat because she made 2 different ones ...

La Romana, La Romana, Dominican Republic carlosjeremyAfter saying goodbye to my family in Florida, I packed my 3 duffel bags and continued on to Santo Domingo, but only made it here with 2 bags, as JetBlue has a new policy that no one is allowed to bring more than 2 bags to the Dominican Republic...so one bag had to travel all the way back to Canada with my mother, so that I can bring it with me when I go back to Halifax in August.

In any event, I did arrive safe and sound, and was picked up no problem and brought ...
Consuelo, San Pedro de Macorís, Dominican Republic la_profeThe Consuelo Rotary club has been busy trying to get some projects started at Nuestros Peqenos Hermanos orphanage this month. We went and had a meeting with one of the women who heads up several projects there, namely the massive organic on-site garden. My club of Dartmouth East will be coming at the end of February or beginning of March for a week, and want to get involved in something to help, so I thought that it would be good to get the Consuelo club on the go in ...
San Pedro de Macoris, Dominican Republic hmacleanI know that it has been a while since my last posting, and I apologize for not getting a chance to update sooner. As you know from my last posting, there is a boy here who needs a brain operation as soon as possible, and the family has no way to pay for it or any follow-up medications or treatments. I am so happy to be able to provide you with a very positive update on what has happened ...
San Pedro de Macoris, Dominican Republic hmacleanPart II - my family and the town of Consuelo! My family has been absolutely wonderful to me since my arrival on Saturday. It is quite a large family, which is something I'm not used to, but it's really nice because there is always someone around. The head of the family (the matriarch) is named Elena Ortiz. She is 76, as I think I mentioned before, and she is so warm, generous, and sweet. She is always worrying about how I am ...

Santo Domingo, Boca Chica, Dominican Republic sgarfefurlans... activities has worn off (IE: hauling water from the river to bathe in twice weekly) but so far so good. Several older volunteers warned us newbies that the first three months in site were rough, lonely and often boring and I'm starting to echo those sentiments, but I do get to see my mom and grandma TODAY so I know that will give me a jumpstart to keep chugging along!! I miss you guys and hope everyone is doing well. Hope to hear from y'all soon. Love, Brad
Cacique, Dominican Republic bradleyhaas... bread, spaghetti and salsa, and brownie (which are still being worked on). It is definitely an adventure learning or attempting to cook here. You have to wash everything and dry it. With vegetable you have to soak then in water and clorox to get the parasites. I am sure that I am going to forget one of the days and wind up at the hospital. Did you know that the leaves of a Yuca plant are poisonous (cyanide). We have to boil them then dump the water and soak. There are just one of ...
