Historical Traveler Reviews of Howard Johnson Lancaster
Awful place!
from JanBury_England
We arrived on August 4th after staying in a lovely hotel in New York. We unpacked all out things then looked at each other and said, "We can't stay here!" The toilet seat fastenings were broken and the bathroom floor was sticky! The door into the room was covered in dirty fingerprints, as was the casing of the hanging space. The TV remote control was broken. All over the door were fastened 'do's' and 'dont's' including one notice that said the room would be checked before we left to check that we had not taken anything! We have stayed in hotels throughout the USA, Europe, Asia and Africa and have never come across this before.
I booked this hotel on a cousin's recommendation - she had stayed there 5 years ago but interestingly enough this hotel no longer features on the Lancaster official site. Thankfully we found another hotel, along the road, for our 3 night stay - it was clean and cosy. I hope I never have to set foot in such an awful hotel again!!

Dumpity, Dumpity, Dump

Lots of shopping on this street. Room was clean, but in terrible condition. Everyhing was very old and very worn. Appeared that nothing was updated for years! Bed was hard as a rock with matching pillows that were flat as a pancake. TV was small with some snow channels. Airconditioning loud and breezy. Not protected from hallway sound. They even ran out of the breakfast if you do not get to it early. Although we booked months inadvance for three nights, staff would not give us another room - or pillows! we paid the managers special (internet) - we did not find it special. Many comparably priced hotels in this area so will not stay here again.
The worst

Our room was so dirty you had to where your shoes to keep from sticking to the floor. Mattress was extremely lumpy. Room smelled terrible like must and mold. The bathroom door and door knob where cruddy with dirt. They had one newspaper to be shared by everyone eating the "deluxe" continentel breakfast. I stayed here based on the previous reviews and maybe they had a better room. I sure hope so. I will never stay at another Howard Johnsons. If you decide to stay here check your room before you pay.

This hotel has new staff that has been trained properly. The hotel was rennovated Dec. 2005. It has free highspeed internet, as well as new quiznos sub and dominos pizza on site with room delivery for both. Also a new elevator has been scheduled to be installed in Spring 2006. The hotel is adding new amenties and has trained staff to provide the best customer service possible. We look forward to serving you.

Nice hotel; wish it had wi-fi internet, but overall good

Great hotel -- they are currently in the process of renovations, and the room we stayed in had nice new carpet. Big rooms (high ceilings!) and extra space for lots of suitcases. I wish this hotel had wireless internet access-- it is really hard to come by in Lancaster, PA hotel. Even just a wireless device in the lobby would really be of great value. It has a pool and breakfast, although breakfast is only served until 9:00 a.m. even on a Sunday morning. Another nice feature of this hotel is its size-- I asked for a quiet room away from other guests and got it. I don't know if it would fill up in the summer, but it February it certainly was nice. I wish all HVAC systems in each room would shut off when the desired temperature was achieved. This hotel, like many others, when you turn on the unit, the fan will run constantly, all night, so you have air blowing on you. It doesn't seem like it would cost too much to install a temperature guage, but too few hotels to do it.
Overall, though, great hotel and I would stay there again.
VERY pleased!

My husband and I stayed here the 19th of Dec. It wasn't fancy at all, but very clean, with a queen-size bed. Didn't have a refrigerator or microwave, but did have an iron/board, hair dryer, tv, heat/ac, as well as an in-room coffee maker. Nice clean bathroom and shower. Plenty of hot water and pressure. There was an indoor pool, but we didn't have time to use it. It also included a continental breakfast. Typical of thoses types, but even had a toaster, and some don't. It was great, especially for free! The room rate was VERY good. It was less than $38/night, including breakfast!!!!!!! We're definately staying there again!!!!!
Hojo was great... will return

We stayed in June, 2004. Came in very late and very tired after a full day at Hershey Park. Took less than 5 minutes to check in to a friendly staff. The crib was waiting in the room, all set up. The room (2 double beds) was larger than most regular rooms of this type. We had lots of room with the crib as well. The breakfast was ok (juice, donuts, muffins, 2 cereals, oranges and apples).
The staff was very nice, every request I made both before I got to the hotel and during our stay was graciously granted.
The only thing that could improve would be the breakfast, but what do you expect for free????
Great value

Had a lovely overnight stay at this property. I got a great deal of $36 for the night, which was certainly a great value. The room was clean and in order, everything was in working condition, coffee/condiments were stocked, comfortable bed, nice decor and quiet. I would consider staying here again, especially for this price.
