We spent last night in Lincoln. It is halfway between our last stop outside St. Louis, and Chicago.
After we left Collinsville, we took a detour to Alton, a town on the Missip where there are locks for river boats. We spent about an hour watching a barge towing one barge 3 boats wide up the river a tad, then another came into the lock. Once the water level had risen, the gates opened and ...

... surprise. The Dana-Thomas House is a beautiful Frank Lloyd Wright designed house known for having some of his most intact house interiors anywhere. It’s a state historic site now and open most days for tours. Before continuing on to the Saint Louis area I finished my day in one of the Midwest’s more pleasant small cities with a Hefeweizen shandy at Obed and Isaac’s Brew Pub. It really hit the spot after walking all around town on a warm sunny ...

... two different versions of Route 66. I continued through Sherman and into the north side of the state capital Springfield. Without stopping in Springfield I took the 1930s route which leaves town using 4 miles of I-55 before becoming the frontage road to the interstate. Litchfield is the largest of the towns on the 1930s route south of Springfield and contains one of the few remaining drive-in theatres ...

So today we left at Chicago at 8am. Rather early esp as I have a yucky head cold. But we made our way out of the big city towards our first stop of Pontiac via sections of freeway and route 66. Lots of route 66 has been paved over or runs along side the main freeways. We stopped in Pontiac and were greated by the Mayor. We had a great tour of Bob Waldmire's Road 'yacht' and saw lots ...
