I followed this stretch of the route to Staunton where the early route and the 1930s route converge and turned around to take the route back to Springfield. Along the way I was able to take the 1940-1977 version of Route 66 through ...

    Chicago to Springfield IL

A travel blog entry by lucyluw on Aug 24, 2013

... about the history of Chicago. We sat down for lunch at The Blue Frog and I started to worry about time. Springfield is a 4 hour drive - without sightseeing on the way so we wanted to leave by 2.30pm - and it was already 1pm. The sky deck visit didn't happen. I drove us out of the city, vicki pointed out as we were driving down 55 - we had put in the satnav 'fastest route' so we had missed the start of Route 66 and just ...
