Woke up to a doozy of a thunderstorm at 4 AM and by 7:30 it was pretty quiet out there so I started packing and making contingency plans. Got all Frogg Togg gear on under my outers and headed off after saying goodbye to the Conoco Tower.
The sky looked like there might be a wedge of no rain.
But 15 minutes later the rain began and the sky ahead looked ...
Our road tripping continued yesterday with a nice sunny ride through Tennessee all the way to Nashville. We were making great time, so we decided to stop at Tennessee's largest flea market. We finally felt like we were in Tennessee when we saw the gaudy jewelry, cowboy hats, mullets, and overalls. We all purchased antique Tennessee whiskey bottles to collect sand in ...
Elk City, Oklahoma, United States amie1188Yesterday we left Sallisaw and headed through Oklahoma toward Santa Fe. Now as long as Pennsylvania is, I think Oklahoma is longer because we are still here. We were hoping to find some cool things to do along the way but we never seem to come across any rest stops that actually have the normal barrage of tourist brochures. They do however have some interesting ...
Weatherford, Oklahoma, United States funkinthetrunkSo today was a fun day. I am still in OK. I went to the route 66 interprative museum. And then down to the round barn in Arcadia ok. The museum was ok. I don't know that it was worth the five bucks. The round barn is totally cool. It was a carpenters wet dream or a nightmare depending on how you look at things. It was built in 1898 and then rebuilt in the 1990's ...
Weatherford, Oklahoma, United States marvs66trip... a turnout that offers a short hike (1.7 miles) to a scenic lookout - Kings Bluff. Stopping to eat at a little café in one of the small towns I've been passing through I read the local paper while I'm waiting. I learn that a 58-year-old-man was sentenced for calling up the Sheriff's Department and telling the deputy who answered the phone that if deputies didn't stop ...
Foss, Oklahoma, United States graybeard... miles up the road, so we headed there. We had another coupon book where we could get a room at the EconoLodge for $39.99 for the night. We headed there - I said to Steve that I wanted to look at the room first before we take it...he agreed that it would be a good idea since the room the night before was less than desirable. When I got into the office, the woman said there were no rooms at that price and it would be $59.00 - the place looked not like ...
Elk City, Oklahoma, United States colleen.killorn... rain, heavy rain. There was one area that water was across the road and I couldn't tell until too late. I think it was less than a half foot deep and only about 8 feet across, but that was kind of scary. The problem is the sides of the road turn up and funnel all the water down the road to the dips. We ended up getting to Clinton a little late but still enough time to get dinner before restaurants close. Tomorrow we head through Texas and into New Mexico.
Clinton, Oklahoma, United States afoonThe morning in Vinita was very cool. It's nice to wake up in exactly the type of motel that you have seen in the movies as a kid. A quick breakfast in an oriental buffet place and let's hit the road jack! :) After a few failures of trying to see something (the owner of one car museum had died and one relic cafeteria had burnt down a few ...
Clinton, Oklahoma, United States life74... guest book. We signed too--pretty cool. Oh yeah, wait until you hear what Allison had for lunch!
We stuck to Route 66 for the rest of the day, at least where we could. In some places, the old highway is gone and the major interstate is all there is. Lots of weird things to see. We found a perfect place to camp near Clinton, right on Foss Reservoir. We were really happy to discover that we've moved out of the humid zone!! Allison got a fire ...
