We both chose what we thought was a quintessential 50's staple - strawberry half-malt milkshake. ... town just north of Williams on the road to the Grand Canyon). I like rocks! I bought a couple new specimens, then we were off to Holbrook, AZ. We had dinner at a passable Chinese restaurant (not run by Chinese, but Hispanics). The egg foo yong was very good, and I'd never had chicken corn egg drop soup before.

... Most of the time you have to stay on the trails, so you don’t have the opportunity to see them up close. Finally, at Jasper Forest the logs were close to the trails, so we got to look at them closely. The rock hound that I am loved having the chance to check them out closely.

We stopped at a couple other lookouts, and as it was getting late, decided to head back to town where we ended the day with Dairy Queen ...

Back on the road Route 66 passes through the small towns of Defiance and Manuelito before climbing a hill from which there is a fantastic view of Route 66, the railroad, the interstate and the Rio Puerco "river" squeezing between mesa's on the way into Arizona. ... train track and the busy road, for variety. Someone had valiantly tried to mend their gas heater by sticking it up with sellotape, but unfortunately it still didn't work.
Annie laughed and opened the gin, offering me a swig.
"I think it's going to be a memorable night" muttered HH in his usual wry way.
I think he could be right.

But we had a birthday to celebrate! So it was all off to the nearest eatery which was the Butterfield Stage ...
