After some anxious moments in traffic, speeding and other aggressive behavior, I made it back to the car rental office at 12:05 pm. I caught a Shinkansen to Tokyo Station. We left the hotel to drive up partway to Mt Fuji. No sooner than leaving Tokyo, we were caught up in a traffic jam for the next 30 minutes. It was rather foggy when we got to around the mountain. We were lucky to be able to see the mountain some of the time. We had a French bistro kind of lunch in a small café. We pretty much occupied the entire place. Food was surprisingly good. We drive the direction of Lake Kawaguchi, one of the well known Five Fuji lakes in the area west of Hakone. We decide to visit Lake Kawaguchi first, now that Fujisan is still visible and the weather is nice. Kawaguchiko is a small city located on the lake, we cross the ...

... then head out to discover the area.  Our first stop is the Hakone Ropeway Station near the hotel. Due to increased seismic activity the area around Owakudani is closed and the Ropeway is closed as well. The views from the Sounzan station is quite nice, however, Fujisan remains covered in clouds. We then drive down to Lake Ashi and stop at Hakone Shrine, a Shinto Shrine built on the shores of Lake Ashi. You can go down the stairs to the Torii which ...
