After the art museum, we walked back to the hotel, picked up the car and drove out of town to the Oulunsalo Museum of Local History and Culture. It was only 12 ks away from the centre. It had a number of 200 year old timber buildings, furnished in the rustic style. It showed life at the beginning of the C20. After that, another short drive to the much larger Turkansaari Open-Air Museum, which had over 40 buildings showcasing ...

We drove from Vaasa to Oulu yesterday. Oulu is the largest northern town in Finland. Our hotel was close to the water which was nice. Today, we set off to walk along the riverside park. We followed the Lonely Planet recommendation and explored the Taidemuseo modern art gallery, which turned out to be very good. The best part was surprisingly the quilt exhibition, featuring a number of U.S. quilt artists. There were other exhibitions as well, and we spent an enjoyable couple of hours ...

... harbour and yacht club OTPS ( Pöllisaari in the Harbour Guide) we turned our noses southwards and prepared to leave latitude 65°N behind, our first harbour to be on the island of Hailuoto, some distance off the coast from Oulu and on the western side and called Marjaniemi. Of course, the wind was as always, difficult, in that it was non-existent for most of the 34 mile journey. Indeed, the forecast for the forthcoming few days is for equally light conditions. This, I suppose, ...

    A bleak harbour

... Mind you there wasn’t much of it, at least initially, so even if it had been in a more favourable direction, it wouldn’t have done us much good.

Today we were going to make the penultimate leg of our northern journey, covering about half the distance to Oulu, we planned on stopping in a small guest harbour called Varessäikkä, just over 20 miles away. Firstly however, we needed to wrestle with the diesel pump and I’m happy to report ...
