... an army of cleaners who constantly trawl the streets like vacuum robots, cleaning up the day's detritus. It also feels extremely safe. At no time at all did we feel threatened or worried about our safety or belongings. Maybe they're too busy taking our jobs to worry about passports and wallets. Let's hope the Russians and Romanians are just as obliging...

... we went! The eye is a cinema which is across the harbour on the north side of Amsterdam. It is a beautiful building and screens a lot of independent films. Unfortunately there wasn't a film with English subtitles for another 2 and a half hours. So we looked in the gift shop, which was pretty amazing in itself. I slept surprisingly well on the overnight flight to Amsterdam (probably due to the combination of an early morning and diphenhydramine hydrochloride). After finding a train into town, I jumped on a tram and made it to my hotel (it's actually more of a bed and breakfast). ... Haag. We took a tram to Scheveningen and discovered the beach. It was a breezy cool day but we found what we would call the boardwalk and walked around for awhile. We had some time to kill before dinner. It was a nice boardwalk that we found out is completely taken down in the winter.
