When the Protestants took over this church from the Catholics in the Reformation, they painted over the wall frescos white, and broke statues and iconoclastically removed all the bling the "Pope's Folks" are famous for. Protestants of the time were more vanilla. Another interesting bit is the original sandstone spire made the Church sink so they replaced it with a lighter wood and browse one and used the stone spire on a nearby newer church. ... the first canal. There were several cheese shops on the other side of the street, and we stopped in for some tasty samples. Our last stop was the Heineken brewery (which isn't actually a brewery anymore, but an "experience") and we went to visit the building and shop and came home to have our own Heineken experience from the fridge! ... Haag. We took a tram to Scheveningen and discovered the beach. It was a breezy cool day but we found what we would call the boardwalk and walked around for awhile. We had some time to kill before dinner. It was a nice boardwalk that we found out is completely taken down in the winter. Dutch landscape: the one thing we've noticed in travelling the countryside (besides everything being flat), is that the fields are very green and full of cows, sheep, horses, etc. There are no fences around these fields - the fields are surrounded by ditches which feed into canals. There is lots of water everywhere we go in Holland. The animals seem very happy ...
