DAY 29: A ferry, water & our last Italian dinner

A travel blog entry by seegersineurope on Oct 09, 2015

We started the morning with coffee (*clear water!) and the pomegranate we picked off Perla and Marco's property in Impruneta.
The 9:49 a.m. train to La Spezia was delayed to 10:35 so we sat and had a caffe latte while we waited. Our plan initially was to go back to the first of the five Cinque Terre villages; Monterosso; by ferry and hit the beach for a while, ' then train to Manarola the one village we didn't see yesterday during our hikes. Instead we are heading to La ...

The sun seems to rise quite early, and it was shining in through all the windows shortly after 5:00am. The problem is that in two mile there are some five washouts which are cordoned off with concrete barriers, which themselves look as though they are about to fall down the cliff face, and which make a one-lane road a three-quarters' lane road. In 2011 heavy rains triggered a mudslide which buried a sizeable chunk of Monterosso's old town and killed 11 locals. That's ...

As our legs were tiring we reached Vernazza. It was a spectacular arrival as we saw azure waters, colourful boats and of course pained houses. This little horse shaped port is tucked away and really can't be seen from the sea. It was the perfect viewing angle to walk towards it as we did. We would not have seen it from a height had we not done that. There was the obligatory castle/fort ...

... then another couple came along and said they had the same seats. It was a little confusing and a short discussion in broken English ensued... then they realised they were in the wrong coach/car!!

Travelling on the train is much faster than the coach, that's for sure. We were on the Freccabianca train to Milan first up today, which didn't go quite as fast as the Frecciarossa we caught last week. From Milan to Cinque Terre, it was the Intercity train, ...
