We have now learnt two things about the weather in this part of Italy- it knows how to be hot and it knows how to rain.
We managed to get under way soon after 08:00. The first part of the ride was on nice quiet roads through lovely countryside up to a little way beyond the lovely hilltop village of San Gimignano. We had an elevenses stop of spinach tortillas at San Gimignano.
Some way after San Gimignano the rain started - the ...

... stop at Vernazza about once an hour so we had to wait for the 3:26 train. By 4:00 a huge crowd had gathered waiting. When the train stops at this station, many of the train cars stay in the tunnel. It seems strange to wait for a train on a platform that is in a tunnel. Upon arrival at 4:15, hundreds of passengers got off causing a huge human traffic jam inside the station tunnel as even more passengers were pushing to get on. We were glad it was a short ride in the packed train. ...

... with artistic use of tiles, marble chips, mosaics, etc and then some great poster photos of the area. The Main Street down to the sea has a fantastic balustrade of black and white photos from the 50's of life in the area as workers in the vineyards. Few people stop to look. Lots of tourists here just make a b-line for the rocks to lay out for the day and don't seem to notice anything around them. Missed our train to Vernazza so had to sit out an hour in a great little wine ...

Steps, steps and more steps - Cinque Terre, Italy

For me I couldn't think of a more perfect introduction to Italy than Cinque Terre. But dad I don't think this place is for you as everywhere is either up or down with steps that just make your legs ache! We managed to pull into the train station at Riomaggiore after two days of traveling. On our way we briefly stopped the night in Mersielle, France but were keen to get to our destination so didn't do much exploring, especially considering the rainy, cold weather ...
