... in like sardines! We didn’t have a plan B as there were no campsites open at all at this time of year so all we could do was the same as everyone else, secure a space!

To be on the safe side we put a ticket on the car and hoping for the best, walked into La Rochelle in the pouring rain. La Rochelle is a beautiful old town with a lovely old harbour and full of very expensive boutiques but unfortunately the weather was ...

... By lunchtime we had managed to avoid the heavy downpours but gave up our preferred stop overlooking the sun soaked beach for a garden centre entrance to escape the storm force winds. We had decided to push on towards Sable d'Olonne until torrential rain and winds forced us to shelter in a bus garage to re-group. Amazingly we opted to abort camping, let alone wild camping in favour of chamber d'hôtel. After ...

A real seaside day. Morning mists as we rose after our wet previous evening to breakfast standing up before setting off along the coast. Morning coffee at Chatelaillon-Plage with local dancing in regional costume to accordions, hurdy gerdys, flutes; then on towards La Rochelle with lunch overlooking the sea as ...

As we got up at 7.30 we just about got away without torches. As light came we had packed up the trailer and panniers and we're sat at our picnic table for tea, muesli and toast with Vegemite and Sarah's home made apricot jam. Then we were off north bound to the ferry crossing to Royan - a rolling, pitching crossing, a bit chillier than our southbound crossing two weeks ago. After 60 some miles (we can't be more accurate as the mileometer stop working after lunches for a few miles) we ...

... together. We (my house) and I rented bikes one afternoon and
toured around the trails of Rochefort, then took a ride on the last
“Pont Transbordeur” in France, across the river to Echilaise and
continued our journey. The weather was great, but the scenery could
be better. You see, the trails we were riding on were following a
very muddy river out to the ocean, so it wasn’t the prettiest site,
      but it was great ...
